Following violence on August 5th of last year, Bangladesh has requested an Interpol Red Corner Notice for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who sought refuge in India. This request was made at the direction of an international tribunal.

Interpol Hasina Update: The Bangladesh government has taken significant action regarding Sheikh Hasina, who left the country following violent protests in Bangladesh on August 5th of last year. A request has been made to Interpol for a Red Corner Notice against the former Prime Minister, currently residing in India, and eleven of her associates. This request was submitted by the National Central Bureau (NCB) of the Bangladesh Police, following instructions from the International Criminal Tribunal.

How Will Interpol Assist?

According to Assistant Inspector General Inamul Haque Sagar of the Police Headquarters, Interpol intervenes in such cases only when courts, government prosecutors, or investigative agencies make a formal request. Interpol plays a crucial role in tracing the location and facilitating the arrest of fugitives hiding in other countries.

Action Taken at the Direction of the International Tribunal

Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal directed in November 2024 that Interpol's support be sought for the arrest of Hasina and other fugitives. Following this directive, a formal request for a Red Corner Notice has now been submitted to Interpol.

Reservation Movement as the Cause

In July 2024, student protests erupted in Bangladesh against the reservation policy, escalating into anti-government demonstrations by August. Following widespread violence in the capital, Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5th. Media reports indicate she has been residing in India since then.

Arrest Warrants Also Issued

Three days after Hasina's departure, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus. The Yunus government filed charges against Hasina and her associates related to International War Crimes and issued arrest warrants.
