Delhi's political landscape is once again experiencing heightened tension. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Delhi Legislative Assembly has decided to investigate another CAG report.
New Delhi: Delhi's political climate is fraught with tension following the Delhi Legislative Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) decision to investigate another CAG report. This development could further complicate matters for former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The report alleges irregularities within the health department, sparking intense debate within the Assembly.
CAG Report Ordered for Investigation
The report was presented on the fourth day of the Delhi Assembly session and subsequently referred to the PAC for investigation. Assembly Speaker, Vijender Gupta, has directed the PAC to submit its report within three months. Previously, a CAG report concerning Delhi's excise policy was also submitted to the PAC.
During the discussions, BJP MLAs alleged that deaths occurred due to oxygen shortages and mismanagement during the COVID-19 pandemic. They demanded a murder case against Kejriwal. BJP leaders claimed the AAP government engaged in widespread corruption within the health sector, causing significant hardship to Delhi's citizens.
Government's Counter-Attack
In the Assembly, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh leveled serious accusations against the AAP government. Gupta stated that corruption occurred under the guise of sanitation, medicine, and treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Significant irregularities were found in the procurement of medical equipment, ranging from N-95 masks to other supplies. She alleged that the Kejriwal government was involved in corruption and misused public funds.
Mounting Troubles for Kejriwal
Former Chief Minister and opposition leader Atishi countered the BJP, accusing them of using the CAG report as a political weapon. She alleged that the BJP's aim was to tarnish the AAP government and divert attention from real issues. Political analysts suggest that the continuous investigation of CAG reports and the BJP's aggressive strategy could exacerbate problems for Arvind Kejriwal.
Investigations into irregularities, from the excise policy to the health sector, are underway, potentially damaging his political image.
