Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a significant meeting on Friday, emphasizing the renewed impetus for strategic cooperation between India and the European Union (EU).

New Delhi: A crucial meeting took place on Friday between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Both leaders focused on accelerating the strategic partnership between India and the European Union. Notably, Ursula von der Leyen visited India with the ‘EU College of Commissioners,’ the senior political leaders from the 27 member states. Discussions centered on strengthening cooperation in crucial areas, including defense, security, and critical technologies.

EU Seeks Security Partnership Similar to Japan and South Korea

The European Union expressed its desire to forge a security partnership with India, similar to those it has with Japan and South Korea. Von der Leyen, addressing a prominent think tank, stated that the shifting global power dynamics present an opportunity for India and Europe to redefine their strategic partnership with a fresh perspective.

She stated, "India is working on strengthening its defense sector and diversifying its military supply chains. The European Union can be a reliable partner in this process."

Agreement on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by Year-End

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to finalize the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of this year. This agreement will boost trade and investment, further strengthening economic cooperation between the two economies. Prime Minister Modi described the India-EU relationship as a natural partnership, emphasizing that this collaboration is essential for the long-term development and stability of both parties.

Agreement to Advance IMEEC

The meeting also saw an agreement to take concrete steps regarding the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). Prime Minister Modi highlighted the project as a crucial engine for global trade and sustainable development. He stated, "IMEEC will be a significant conduit for boosting trade prospects not only for India and Europe but for the entire world."

The European Union and India also aligned on the need for peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Von der Leyen stated that this region is at the heart of the global power balance and that India and Europe must work together to ensure its security. This meeting, focusing on enhanced cooperation between India and the EU, marks a significant milestone for both parties.
