Violence Erupts in Nagpur Following Aurangzeb Tomb Dispute; Several Homes and Shops Burned.

Nagpur violence: Nagpur, Maharashtra, has been engulfed in violence following a dispute over Aurangzeb's tomb. Violent clashes erupted between two groups in the Mahal and Hanspuri areas of Nagpur. Rioters engaged in widespread stone-pelting and set fire to numerous homes, shops, and vehicles. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued a statement on the matter.

Fadnavis: Violence Was Pre-planned

CM Fadnavis described the violence as pre-planned, stating that the riots were not spontaneous but the result of a premeditated strategy. He further suggested that the recently released film, "Chhawa," exacerbated pre-existing anger surrounding Aurangzeb. However, he appealed for peace in Maharashtra.

Attacks on Police Unacceptable

Fadnavis unequivocally stated that attacks on the police would not be tolerated. He assured that b action would be taken against the rioters. Several police officers sustained injuries during the violence and have been hospitalized.

CCTV Footage Reveals Extent of Violence

Numerous videos and CCTV footage have emerged showing rioters damaging public property and engaging in stone-pelting. Reports indicate that the violence erupted during a clash between those protesting a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal demonstration. The violence subsequently escalated, spreading tension across several areas.

Residential Areas Targeted

According to police, clashes occurred in the Hanspuri area near Old Bhandara Road between approximately 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM. Eyewitnesses reported that the angry mob set fire to several vehicles and vandalized homes. A local resident stated that around 7:30 PM, a mob suddenly entered the Old Hislop College area near Chitanis Park and began pelting stones at houses.
