The Friends

Deputy Shyama Charan's residence was a hub of beauty today, a gathering of charming women transforming it into Indra's assembly. Sevati, accompanied by her four companions—Rukmini, Sita, Ramdei, and Chandrakumari—all adorned in their finest silks and elegant attire, moved with a graceful confidence. Deputy Saheb's sister, Janaki Kunwar, also arrived from Itawah with her two daughters, Kamala and Uma Devi. Kamala was married, while Uma Devi remained unmarried. They were as radiant as the sun and moon. Within the courtyard, wedding musicians and attendants filled the air with wedding songs and auspicious chants. Gulbiya and Jamuni, brightly dressed in vibrant silks, their foreheads adorned with vermillion, their wrists gleaming with gold bangles, moved with a lively grace. Gulbiya was a youthful beauty, while Jamuni's age had begun to show. Sevaati, however, possessed a unique charm that day. Her lustrous eyes sparkled with joyful intensity, and the light from her pink sari seemed to imbue the surrounding champai colours with a rosy hue. Her elegant, deep crimson embroidered silk kurta complemented her beautifully. Having just bathed, her dark hair flowed like a serpent around her shoulders. The merriment and lively interaction left no time for her to have her hair neatly styled.

Rukmini asked Sevati, "Sito, where is your sister-in-law? I cannot see her. Is she not interacting with us?"

Ramdei (with a smile), "Why not? Surely, we are not cursed by her glance?"

Sevati replied, "She might be resting in her room. Let me check." And with those words, she walked to the room, as bright and radiant as the moon.

There, she found a woman dressed in a simple sari, lying on a cot, her eyes fixed towards the doorway. The woman, startled by Sevati's arrival, quickly sat up.

Sevati asked, "Why are you lying here alone? Surely, you are not feeling distressed?"

Chandra answered, "Oh, I was just not dressed yet."

Sevati said, "Why aren't you dressed? Your friends are waiting."

Chandra responded, "I will not dress yet."

Sevati continued, "This stubbornness does not look good. What will others be thinking?"

Chandra said, "You did receive my letter, didn't you? I wrote that I would come today."

Sevati stated, "Alright, so she is waiting for his arrival. That is why she is dressed like this."

Chandra remarked, "It is afternoon now, perhaps he won't come."

At that moment, Kamala and Uma Devi both arrived. Chandra removed her veil and sat on the floor. Kamala was Chandra's elder sister-in-law.

Kamala said, "Oh, she isn't dressed yet!"

Sevati replied, "She is awaiting her brother-in-law's arrival."

Kamala stated, "She is foolish! He will surely come!"

Sevati remarked, "Her thinking is unique."
