Once the world's most popular video calling platform, Skype is soon to become a relic of the past. Microsoft has officially announced that Skype services will cease permanently on May 5th, 2025. The company advises users to switch to Microsoft Teams, a more modern and feature-rich communication platform.

Skype's Journey

Skype launched in 2003 and quickly became a trusted platform for video calling and messaging. Microsoft acquired it in 2011 for $8.5 billion and subsequently attempted to integrate it with Windows and other Microsoft products. However, in recent years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, it fell behind competitors like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.

Why is Microsoft Shutting Down Skype?

* Decreasing User Base: Skype has experienced a significant decline in users over the past few years.
* Lack of Modern Features: Microsoft Teams and other platforms offer more advanced features compared to Skype.
* Reduced Business Usage: Most companies and professionals now rely on services like Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet.
* Microsoft's Focus on Teams: Microsoft is now fully focused on developing Teams, which offers a more efficient and integrated service than Skype.

How to Switch from Skype to Microsoft Teams?

* Microsoft has streamlined the migration process from Skype to Teams for user convenience.
* Download Microsoft Teams: First, install the Microsoft Teams app on your device.
* Log in with Skype Credentials: Microsoft has stated that users can log into Teams using their existing Skype accounts.
* Automatic Data Transfer: All chat history, contacts, and call logs will be automatically transferred to Teams.

Skype-Teams Integration

Skype Credit and Subscriptions: Existing Skype subscribers can use their credits until their next renewal. Dial-pad functionality will remain available for paid users via Microsoft Teams and the Skype web portal. Those who do not wish to migrate to Microsoft Teams can export their chat history, contacts, and other data. Microsoft has provided this option to ensure users don't lose their important information.
