Aam Aadmi Party in Minority: Sangrur Municipal Council Rocked by Councilors' Resignations and Support Withdrawal

Aam Aadmi Party in Minority: Sangrur Municipal Council Rocked by Councilors' Resignations and Support Withdrawal
Last Updated: 6 hour ago

The Aam Aadmi Party has weakened in the Sangrur Municipal Council. Following the resignation of eight councilors and the withdrawal of support by independent councilors, the party is in a minority, making it challenging to maintain stable leadership.

Punjab: The position of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Sangrur Municipal Council is continuously weakening. After failing to secure a majority in the Municipal Council elections and eight councilors leaving the party within just five months, AAP is now in a minority. The indifference of the party high command has increased the likelihood of a power struggle within the council. A united front of at least 21 councilors is necessary to remove the Municipal Council President, but this does not appear possible under current circumstances.

Municipal Council Elections

The Aam Aadmi Party failed to achieve a majority in the Sangrur Municipal Council elections. Out of a total of 29 seats, AAP won seven, Congress nine, BJP three, and ten independent candidates were victorious. Following the elections, five independent councilors supported AAP, increasing the party's strength to 12. These five independent councilors included Jagjit Singh Kala, Gurdeep Kaur, Pradeep Kumar Puri, Avtar Singh Tara, and Parminder Singh Pinky.

Effort to Make Bhupinder Singh Nahal the President

On April 26, 2025, the Aam Aadmi Party declared Bhupinder Singh Nahal as the President of the Municipal Council with the support of two MLAs and two independent councilors. This alliance was crucial for the party, as ensuring stable leadership in the Municipal Council was challenging.

Impact of Resignations

Following the recent resignation of eight councilors from the party, the Aam Aadmi Party is left with only four councilors. As a result, AAP is now in a minority. The resigning councilors include the Senior Vice President and Vice President.

Out of the total 29 councilors in the Municipal Council, a two-thirds majority, meaning the unity of at least 21 councilors, is required to remove any President. With only four councilors remaining for the party in the current situation, removing the President has become impossible for now.

Independent Councilors Also Withdraw Support

Five independent councilors of the Municipal Council had initially supported the Aam Aadmi Party. Among them, Vijay Lankesh from Ward No. 16 and Jasveer Kaur from Ward No. 27 had lent their support to make him the President. However, following the resignation of eight councilors, these two independent councilors also withdrew their support.

They clarified that they had initially offered support for the development of the city. But after the formation of the Municipal Council, no development work took place in the city, and civic problems remained unresolved. It was for this reason that they were compelled to withdraw their support.

Politics in the Council

A power struggle (Political Maneuvering) is now clearly visible in the Municipal Council. Following the resignation of eight councilors and the withdrawal of support by independent councilors, it has become difficult for AAP to maintain control over the Council. 21 councilors are required to remove the President in the Municipal Council, but in the current situation, achieving this number seems impossible for the party.
