The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench has permitted the Union government to be impleaded as a party in a case related to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship and directed it to place all relevant records before the court at the next hearing.
The order was passed by a bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi while hearing a petition filed by S. Vignesh Shishir. The court formally allowed the Union government to be added as an opposite party and directed it to submit all related documents by April 6.

The proceedings arise from a petition seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi over allegations related to his citizenship. A special MP-MLA court in Lucknow had dismissed the petition on January 28, 2026. The decision was subsequently challenged before the High Court, where the matter is currently under consideration.
During a previous hearing, the Union government informed the court that certain documents related to the case had been obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs and were of a confidential nature. The government requested that the matter not be heard in open court. The court accepted the request and conducted the proceedings in chambers.
The petition cites provisions under the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act, and the Official Secrets Act, seeking registration of a case against Rahul Gandhi under these laws and a detailed investigation into the matter.
