New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate Asia's largest Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) today, Tuesday, in Delhi's Okhla. This project will prove to be a significant milestone in the efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna River. Additionally, Amit Shah will also launch 46 other sewage and sanitation-related projects, costing a total of 4,000 crore rupees, under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) at a ceremony to be held in Keshavpur, Vikaspuri.

Event and Presidency

The grand event will be presided over by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Approximately 6,000 people, including local residents, leaders, and officials, will be present on the occasion. According to officials, the Okhla STP is the largest plant of its kind in Asia, with a treatment capacity of 124 Million Gallons per Day (MGD).

The total cost of this project is 1,161 crore rupees, and it spans an area of 40 acres. This new facility will replace four existing older sewage treatment units. The new plant is designed not only for sewage treatment but also includes power generation from waste and the production of A-grade sludge, which can be reused in agriculture and landscaping.

Millions to Benefit

According to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), approximately 40 lakh residents of South, Central, and Old Delhi will directly benefit from this plant. The project is expected to significantly reduce the amount of untreated sewage flowing into the Yamuna River. This is among the crucial targets set under the Yamuna Action Plan-III.

Construction of the Okhla STP began in 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and construction restrictions imposed by the government. It was originally scheduled for completion in 2022, but the final work was completed and successfully tested in April 2025. Officials stated that 85% of the funding for this project was provided by the central government, while the remaining amount was provided by the Delhi government. This large-scale investment is expected to bring new momentum to the cleaning of the Yamuna River and environmental improvement.

The Okhla STP and associated projects will play a decisive role in the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River. They will prove crucial in making the river clean, reducing pollution, and improving the quality of life for nearby residents. This project is expected to bring benefits to water quality and public health in Delhi and surrounding areas in the coming years.
