Preparations are underway at Bhagalpur Railway Junction ahead of Chhath Puja to manage train operations and passenger movement. Proposed changes to train operations on platforms 2 and 3 could affect the arrangement for trains to stand simultaneously at the two platforms. Meanwhile, the project to install lifts at the station has been delayed for around three months.
Bhagalpur Railway Junction, an important station under the Malda Division of Eastern Railway, handles a large number of passengers travelling to various cities every day. Passenger traffic increases during Diwali and Chhath Puja as people working in other states return home for the festivals and subsequently travel back to their workplaces. The resulting increase in passenger movement places additional pressure on platforms, foot overbridges, stairways and station entrances.
The proposed changes to train operations on platforms 2 and 3 could affect passenger movement and platform management during the festival period. If the arrangement allowing trains to stand simultaneously at both platforms is affected, passengers will need to check their allotted platforms and train schedules in advance.
Railway authorities will also need to coordinate train arrivals, departures and platform allocations to manage passenger movement. During the festive rush, passengers frequently travel with luggage, making timely information about platform assignments and schedule changes important for their journeys.
As part of the passenger infrastructure improvements at Bhagalpur Junction, work has been undertaken to widen the foot overbridge connecting platforms 2 and 3 at the Lohia Bridge end. The bridge, which was previously 1.3 metres wide, has been widened to 2.3 metres.
The additional width provides more space for passengers moving between platforms. Previously, the arrival of a major train could result in a large number of passengers gathering on the foot overbridge, potentially causing congestion and crowding. The widened structure is intended to improve movement, particularly during periods of increased passenger traffic such as Chhath Puja.
The installation of lifts is another component of the station's passenger infrastructure expansion. A lift is planned near the foot overbridge to facilitate movement between platforms 2 and 3. An additional lift is also proposed near the escalator on platform 1.
The proposed facilities are intended to make station access easier for elderly passengers, persons with disabilities, people who are unwell, women and passengers carrying heavy luggage. Once operational, the lifts could reduce the need for passengers to use stairways when moving between platforms.
However, the project has remained delayed for around three months, raising questions about when passengers will be able to use the facilities. The delay is particularly relevant ahead of Chhath Puja, when passenger traffic at the station is expected to increase.
Bhagalpur Junction handles approximately 50,000–55,000 passenger movements daily under normal conditions. Passenger numbers increase further during festivals, when large numbers of people travel to and from the station.
During Chhath Puja, passengers may need additional time to board trains, reach their platforms and wait within the station premises. Train operation arrangements, foot overbridge capacity and access facilities such as lifts are therefore relevant to managing movement during the festival period.
Railway authorities face the task of managing passenger crowds while preventing excessive congestion on individual platforms and maintaining orderly movement across the station.
The ongoing infrastructure projects are intended to improve the station's capacity to handle passenger movement in the longer term, in addition to addressing requirements during the festive season. Plans involving platforms 2 and 3, the widening of foot overbridge stairways and lift installation form part of the proposed improvements to passenger access.
Plans have also been prepared to modernise arrangements relating to the station yard and train operations. Completion of these works is expected to assist the management of long-distance train operations and passenger congestion on platforms.
Completing the planned work within the required timeframe remains a key challenge ahead of Chhath Puja. Construction activities will need to be coordinated with train operations, while passenger safety and convenience remain important considerations during the festival rush.
If lift installation work is not completed on time, elderly passengers and persons with disabilities may continue to depend on stairways. Changes to platform operations will also make timely and accurate information about platform numbers, train arrivals and departures important for passengers.
The proposed changes to train operations on platforms 2 and 3, together with the delay in the lift project, are relevant to passenger movement and crowd management at Bhagalpur Junction ahead of Chhath Puja. The widened foot overbridge is one of the infrastructure measures aimed at improving movement between platforms. The completion timeline for the remaining passenger facilities and the arrangements for managing the expected festival rush remain key issues for the station.
