The political temperature has once again heated up for the Bihar Assembly elections in 2025. A statement by senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has caused a stir within the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan). He said that the Chief Minister will be from the party that secures a majority, and this is a tradition in some places but not others.
Patna: Once again, a confrontation through statements has been witnessed between the RJD and Congress in Bihar. The RJD has consistently projected Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Grand Alliance, but the Congress does not seem to be openly commenting on this. Recently, during the Voter Adhikar Yatra (Voter Rights March), Tejashwi presented himself as the Chief Ministerial candidate of the Grand Alliance in front of Rahul Gandhi, but there has been no official confirmation from the Congress side yet.
After the conclusion of this march, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, upon arriving in Patna, further escalated the political temperature with a statement on Tuesday (September 2, 2025).
Digvijaya Singh's Statement
When journalists asked Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who arrived in Patna during the conclusion of the Voter Adhikar Yatra, about the lack of discussion on the Chief Ministerial face within the Grand Alliance, he replied, "The Chief Minister will be from the party that gets the majority. This is a tradition in some places, not in others. Therefore, if we decide who the Chief Minister will be, what will you people do?"
This statement raised several questions in political circles. This statement from the Congress was seen as an indirect signal that the party has not yet provided clarity on the Chief Ministerial face within the Grand Alliance.
RJD Retaliates
The RJD immediately reacted to this. Party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said, "It doesn't matter what anyone is saying. Everyone is listening to what the 14 crore people of Bihar are saying. Tejashwi Yadav was the Grand Alliance's Chief Ministerial candidate in 2020 and remains the Chief Ministerial face in 2025. There should be no confusion about this."
He further added, "All the parties in the INDIA alliance know that the RJD has the best ground presence in Bihar. RJD is the largest party. Asking such questions is dishonest. Just as the sun rises in the east, it is certain that Tejashwi Yadav will become the Chief Minister."
Status of Voter Adhikar Yatra
It is to be noted that during the Voter Adhikar Yatra, the Grand Alliance showcased unity and power. During the march, leaders interacted with the public, emphasized the importance of voting, and demonstrated the alliance's strength. However, a clear picture regarding the CM face within the alliance is still absent. The lack of a clear endorsement from the Congress and Digvijaya Singh's statement have increased discussions in political corridors.
Experts opine that this statement reflects the indecisiveness within the Grand Alliance. Although the RJD immediately refuted it and presented its Chief Ministerial candidate with clarity to the public.
