Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the Bisalpur Dam, located in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, reached its maximum water storage capacity for the first time in the month of July. Following the rise in water level, one gate of the dam had to be opened on Thursday at 4:56 PM. Prior to this, the gates of the Bisalpur Dam had never been opened before August 18th.
Prayers and Security Arrangements Before Opening the Gate
The gate opening process began with traditional prayers. Tonk District Collector Kalpana Agarwal and BJP MLA Rajendra Gurjar from the Deoli constituency opened the dam's gate by pressing the button after performing religious rituals. Currently, only gate number 10 out of the dam's total 18 gates has been opened.
Before opening the gate, people in the low-lying areas were alerted by sounding sirens and making announcements from 12 noon. The administration made extensive security arrangements to prevent any loss of life. As soon as the gate opened, a large number of local people arrived to witness the spectacle, creating a fair-like atmosphere. Many people took pictures and videos, while some applauded and expressed their joy by distributing sweets.
Dam Supplies Water to Cities Like Jaipur and Ajmer
The Bisalpur Dam is one of the most important water sources in Rajasthan. Its water is supplied for drinking not only to Tonk but also to Jaipur, Ajmer, and other cities. In addition, farmers in the surrounding districts also receive water from this dam for irrigation. Since the construction of the dam, the water scarcity in these areas has significantly reduced.
This event of the dam opening is considered special because its gate has never been opened in July before. This dam was built at a cost of ₹556 crore. Its height is approximately 40 meters and its length is 574 meters. It stores water from the Banas River and rainwater. With the opening of the gate, water is being released directly into the Banas River, which is already overflowing.
Gates Have Been Opened Eight Times So Far
The gates of the Bisalpur Dam have been opened a total of eight times so far. The gate was first opened on August 18, 2004. After that, the process was repeated in 2006, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2024. But in 2025, it happened for the first time that the gates had to be opened in the month of July itself.
However, the administration says that all necessary precautionary measures have been taken to prevent a flood or damage-like situation in the low-lying areas. The concerned departments have been placed on high alert and surveillance has been increased.
The opening of the Bisalpur Dam in July has been an unusual but necessary step. Considering the heavy rainfall and increasing pressure of the water level, the administration averted a potential crisis by making the right decision at the right time. At the same time, this event also became a topic of discussion among the people, and a large number of people reached the dam to see it and capture the moment on camera.
