The Sacred Story of Chaurachan Puja
According to Mithila tradition, once Lord Ganesha was on a tour of Kailash with his vehicle, Mushak, when he heard the sound of Chandradev laughing. When Ganesh Ji asked the reason, Chandradev said that he was laughing at the strange form of Lord Ganesha. Chandradev started praising his own form and making fun of others. Seeing his arrogant nature, Lord Ganesha cursed him that whoever sees the moon on this day will face false accusations in their life.
Chandradev realized his mistake and apologized to Ganesh Ji by worshiping him with rituals on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Ganesh Ji forgave him, but did not completely withdraw the curse. Instead, he gave a boon that the person who worships the moon on this date will have less impact of the tainted moon on them. Due to this story, the tradition of Chaurachan Vrat and ritualistic worship of the moon started in the Mithila region, which is still considered a symbol of good fortune and purification of life.
