Cases of online fraud through fake discounts and gift links on WhatsApp and Instagram are increasing ahead of the Diwali festival. Cyber experts have warned that clicking on such scams can lead to bank account information being leaked and the entire account being emptied.
Online Fraud: As the festive season begins, online shopping has accelerated in India, but concurrently, the activity of fraudsters has also increased. According to cybersecurity agencies, phishing links are being sent on WhatsApp and Instagram in the name of free gifts and Diwali offers. Clicking on these fake links steals users' personal and banking information. Thousands of such cases have been reported across the country, where money has disappeared from people's accounts. Cyber experts have advised people to remain vigilant and not click on any suspicious links.
Fake Gift and Phishing Links Spreading on WhatsApp
Messages like "Click and get a Diwali gift" are rapidly spreading on WhatsApp these days. These messages often contain a link or a photo, which, when clicked, directs the user to a fake website. Here, they are asked for their name, phone number, and bank details.
Cybersecurity agencies have warned that these links often contain hidden malware or spyware, which can steal data from the phone. This information can then be sold on the dark web or used for further fraud.
Lure of Free Gifts and Diwali Offers
Many scammers contact users via Instagram and WhatsApp DMs, informing them that they have won a big gift, such as a free iPhone 17 Pro Max or a Diwali bonus voucher. However, the next step is always the same: they demand money in the name of courier charges or processing fees.
As soon as the victim transfers the money, the fraudsters disappear. Often, scammers also extort money from people under the guise of fake Diwali events and gift card schemes. Cyber police have blocked hundreds of fraudulent accounts in such cases.
How to Keep Yourself Safe
- Do not click on any unknown links or messages.
- Always verify if an offer is genuine by checking the brand's official website or social media page.
- Before making any payment, check the credibility of the source.
- Limit your phone's app permissions and location access.
- Do not rush into anything out of greed, as this is the fraudsters' biggest weapon.
