BJP-led NDA nominates CP Radhakrishnan for Vice President Election 2025. The NDA has more than a majority of votes, while the INDI Alliance has yet to decide on a candidate.
Vice President Election 2025: The answer to the question of who will be the next Vice President of India will be known on September 9, 2025. The BJP-led NDA coalition has announced CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate. On the other hand, the INDI Alliance has not yet decided on a candidate. In the current situation, the NDA's mathematics appears b. But in politics, it is difficult to say when equations will change.
Who is NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan?
CP Radhakrishnan is currently the Governor of Maharashtra. He is considered a veteran leader from Tamil Nadu and has held many important positions in the BJP organization. He was twice a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. He also became the President of Tamil Nadu BJP and contributed to strengthening the party in the state. Now he has been made the candidate for the Vice President election.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, along with many senior leaders, have congratulated him. BJP President JP Nadda has said that the party will also talk to the opposition so that the election can be unopposed.
How the Vice President election is held
The Vice President of India is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In the election process, members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha cast their votes. A total of 786 MPs have the right to vote. This includes nominated members as well. However, six seats are currently vacant. To win the election, any candidate needs at least 349 votes.
How much strength does the NDA have?
- There are a total of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. Out of these, one seat (Basirhat, West Bengal) is currently vacant. In such a situation, the effective number is 542. Out of these, the NDA has 293 MPs.
- There are a total of 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha, but four seats are vacant in Jammu and Kashmir and one seat in Punjab. In this way, the effective number is 240. In this, the NDA has the support of approximately 129 MPs.
- If the figures of both houses are added, then the NDA is estimated to have approximately 422 votes. This number is much more than the majority. That is, in the current situation, CP Radhakrishnan's victory is almost certain.
The position of the opposition
The INDI Alliance has not yet announced a candidate for the Vice President election. There is discussion in the opposition camp about whether to field a joint candidate or stay away from the election. Even if the opposition stands united and fields a candidate, it does not have enough numbers to defeat the NDA.
Possibility of unopposed election
BJP President JP Nadda has said that we will talk to the opposition. If the opposition does not field a candidate, then this election can also be unopposed. In India, many elections for the post of Vice President and President have been held without any contest before. If the opposition withdraws from the election, then CP Radhakrishnan will become the unopposed Vice President. This will be a matter of pride not only for the BJP but also for Tamil Nadu.
Constitutional provisions
According to Article 68(2) of the Constitution, if the post of Vice President becomes vacant for any reason, it is mandatory to hold a new election within six months. The term of the Vice President is five years, but the post may also become vacant due to resignation or other reasons before the completion of the term.
