The Directorate of Education, Delhi, has prohibited students, teachers, and staff from creating reels and short videos during class hours in schools, according to a recently issued circular. The decision was taken after concerns that social media video recording during lessons was affecting classroom learning.
As per the circular, no student, teacher, or staff member is permitted to record reels or short videos under any circumstances during teaching hours. The education department stated that the increasing use of mobile cameras has begun to affect focus on academic activities.
School administrations have been instructed to monitor such activities and take immediate action if violations are observed. The directive emphasises that students’ attention during classes must remain focused solely on the curriculum and classroom instruction.

The education department reported receiving repeated complaints that in some schools, students and, in certain instances, teachers were creating videos for social media during school hours. These activities were disrupting studies and distracting other students.
In response to these incidents, the department issued the directive to enforce discipline and maintain an academic environment within schools. Officials stated that schools are meant for education and discipline, not for entertainment or social media content creation.
The circular does not impose a complete ban on video recording. Permission may be granted for recording videos related to academic programmes, cultural events, or awareness campaigns.
In such cases, prior approval is required, and video recording must take place under the supervision of teachers. It must also be ensured that academic activities are not disrupted and that students’ safety and privacy are fully maintained.
