Delhi-Meerut Expressway May Reopen After Review as Kanwariya Movement Declines

Delhi-Meerut Expressway may reopen to general traffic after a Tuesday afternoon review if Kanwariya movement declines, while traffic in Kalindi Kunj is expected to remain slow until August 12.

The Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which has remained closed during the Kanwar Yatra, may be reopened to general traffic after a review by the traffic police on Tuesday afternoon if the number of Kanwariyas carrying Ganga water decreases. The traffic police will assess the movement of Kanwariyas and road conditions before taking a final decision.

The traffic police will review the situation on Tuesday regarding the reopening of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which was closed due to the Kanwar Yatra. If the number of Kanwariyas carrying Ganga water decreases by the afternoon, traffic may be restored on the Meerut-to-UP Gate section of the expressway.

ADCP Traffic Varun Kumar Singh said restrictions on the expressway would continue on Tuesday. A decision on further traffic arrangements will be taken after assessing the movement of Kanwariyas and road conditions in the afternoon. He said the route could be opened to general vehicles if the pressure of Kanwariya movement decreases.

The final decision on reopening the expressway will be based on ground conditions, the number of Kanwariyas and the traffic arrangements.

Traffic diversions were implemented on several major routes across Delhi-NCR from July 29 in view of the Kanwar Yatra. Due to the movement of a large number of Kanwariyas, motorists in Delhi-Meerut Road, Ghaziabad and surrounding areas had to use alternative routes.

According to the traffic police, diversions on several routes are expected to be lifted after Tuesday afternoon. Traffic arrangements are expected to return to normal from Wednesday.

The normalisation of traffic on Delhi-Meerut Road is expected to ease travel for people living in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Muradnagar and Modinagar. During the Kanwar Yatra, daily commuters in these areas faced longer routes and traffic congestion.

Traffic in Kalindi Kunj and surrounding areas is expected to remain slow until August 12, according to the Delhi Traffic Police.

Increased traffic pressure during the Kanwar Yatra is one of the reasons for the slowdown. Vehicle movement is also being affected by repair work on the Okhla Barrage-to-Kalindi Kunj route.

Traffic movement in the area is expected to return to normal after the Kanwar Yatra ends and the road-related work eases.
