The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has increased metro fares after eight years. The new slabs are effective from August 25, 2025. There is an increase of ₹1-4 for distances of 0-32+ km, and an increase of ₹5 on the Airport Express Line.
Delhi Metro: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has increased its fares after a hiatus of eight years. This increase has come into effect from August 25, 2025. DMRC stated that the number of passengers had significantly decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing financial losses to the corporation. Additionally, the financial situation of DMRC had weakened due to no changes in fares over the past eight years.
Reason for Fare Hike
DMRC has cited several financial and operational reasons behind the fare increase. The biggest reason is the sharp decline in passenger numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, people used public transport less, which affected DMRC's revenue.
In addition, the repayment of a loan of ₹26,760 crore taken from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) remains a challenge for DMRC.
Along with this, the need for mid-life refurbishment of Delhi Metro's trains, civil assets, and machinery has also increased financial pressure. Expenses such as routine network maintenance, increased electricity costs, and employee salaries have put additional strain on DMRC's financial condition.
No Fare Hike in the Last Eight Years
DMRC said that the corporation's financial condition had deteriorated due to no change in fares in the last eight years. Keeping this in mind, a nominal increase of ₹1 to ₹4 has now been made. On the Airport Express Line, this increase is up to ₹5.
New Fare Slabs
Following the new increase, DMRC fares are as follows:
- 0-2 kilometers distance: Increased from ₹10 to ₹11
- 2-5 kilometers distance: Increased from ₹20 to ₹21
- 5-12 kilometers distance: Increased from ₹30 to ₹32
- 12-21 kilometers distance: Increased from ₹40 to ₹43
- 21-32 kilometers distance: Increased from ₹50 to ₹54
- Distance over 32 kilometers: Increased from ₹60 to ₹64
Fares on the Airport Express Line have been increased by ₹1 to ₹5.
Separate Slabs for Holidays and Sundays
DMRC stated that different fares will be applicable on Sundays and national holidays. For example, the fare for a distance of more than 32 kilometers will be ₹54, and the fare for a distance of 12-21 kilometers will be ₹32. This arrangement has been made to provide easy travel to passengers even on holidays.
