Construction of Kalkaji and Modi Mill flyovers will commence in the southern part of Delhi. Savitri Cinema and Kalkaji flyovers will be doubled. This will ease traffic in Chittaranjan Park, Greater Kailash, and Nehru Place areas.
Delhi: The Delhi government and PWD have conceived an ambitious plan to combat the daily traffic jams in South Delhi. This includes the construction of flyovers near Kalkaji and Modi Mill. The objective of this project is to facilitate smoother traffic flow in busy areas such as Chittaranjan Park, Greater Kailash, Chirag Delhi, and Nehru Place.
Soil Testing and Geotechnical Survey
Before commencing the construction of the flyovers, the Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated soil testing and geotechnical surveys. For this purpose, deep boreholes are being dug into the ground, and soil samples are being sent to laboratories. This will ensure that the foundations of the flyovers are robust and secure.
Special investigations are being conducted for the Savitri Cinema and Kalkaji flyovers. The subterranean condition of the ground is being assessed using machinery, and if rock is present underground, its depth and strength are being determined.
Savitri Cinema Flyover to be Doubled
According to the plan, the current single flyover in front of Savitri Cinema will be doubled. This flyover will facilitate traffic movement on both sides, towards IIT and towards Modi Mill.
Currently, there is only a single flyover here, which was built in 2001. There is no flyover to go from the IIT side to Modi Mill, causing heavy traffic jams during morning and evening hours. Citizens have been demanding the construction of a flyover in this area for the past 15 years.
Kalkaji Flyover and Modi Mill Connection
The flyover near Kalkaji Temple is also planned to be doubled. It will be connected to the railway line flyover located near Modi Mill. This will allow commuters traveling to and from Nehru Place to Modi Mill, and from Modi Mill to Nehru Place, to navigate traffic with ease.
This modification will improve traffic in the Kalkaji, Chittaranjan Park, Greater Kailash, Chirag Delhi, and Nehru Place areas.
Project Budget and Financial Approval
The estimated cost of this project is Rs 412 crore. It will be financed from the budget allocated to Delhi from the Central Road Fund (CRF). Approval from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is required. If additional funds are needed for the project, the PWD can request them.
The Delhi government gave the green signal for this project in April 2025. However, it was first proposed in 2015, but work was stalled due to issues such as land acquisition, tree cutting, and funding.
Construction Work Outline
The construction process for the flyovers will be phased. First, the soil and ground testing will be completed. Following this, the foundation will be laid, and the pillars and superstructure of the flyovers will be constructed. After the construction of both the Savitri Cinema and Kalkaji flyovers, they will be interconnected.
In addition to this, the width of the roads and the signaling system will also be modernized along with the flyovers. This will provide a faster and safer route for commuters.
