Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath Gains International Recognition for Landmark Stray Dog Verdict

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice Vikram Nath recently stated that the verdict he delivered on stray dogs has made him famous worldwide. Speaking at an event in Kerala, he mentioned that due to this case, people now recognize him from a different perspective.

Expresses Gratitude to CJI Gawai

Addressing a conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Justice Vikram Nath expressed his gratitude to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Gawai for assigning him the case. He remarked that until now, people knew him for his work in the legal field, but the dog case brought him a unique kind of recognition.

Supreme Court's Initial Order and Subsequent Modification

On August 11, Justice Vikram Nath's bench had ordered the removal of all stray dogs from the Delhi-NCR region. Following widespread opposition to this decision, a three-judge bench, on August 22, provided a concession, stating that dogs could be returned to their original areas after receiving vaccination.

What Justice Vikram Nath Said

Justice Vikram Nath shared that after this verdict, he received numerous messages from across the country and abroad. He mentioned that even "dog lovers" sent him thank-you notes. He humorously added that many dogs also conveyed their gratitude.

In Line to Become CJI in 2027

Justice Vikram Nath is in line to become the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in 2027. He noted that he has been working in the legal profession for a long time, but this case has brought him recognition not only within India but across the globe.

Supreme Court's Final Verdict

On August 22, the bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta, and Justice NV Anjaria ruled that stray dogs should be returned to their original areas after being vaccinated. However, this concession would not apply to dogs infected with rabies. As soon as this decision was announced, it became a subject of intense discussion on social media. Many lauded the order as humane, while others felt it also took into account the safety of local residents.
