Delhi to Ban Older Commercial Vehicles from Nov 2025: Only BS6 Allowed to Enter Capital

Delhi government announces a ban on BS4 and BS5 commercial vehicles from November 1, 2025. Only BS6 compliant vehicles will be allowed entry to improve air quality.

The Delhi government has taken a significant step to control air pollution. From November 1, 2025, only BS6 commercial vehicles will be allowed entry at the Delhi border, while older diesel vehicles will be completely banned.

New Delhi: Taking another major step in the mission to make Delhi's air clean, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's government has announced that from November 1, 2025, only commercial vehicles conforming to BS-6 standards will be permitted to enter Delhi's borders. All other BS-4 and BS-5 vehicles will be completely prohibited. This decision has been taken following guidelines from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and aims to improve the deteriorating air quality of the capital.

Entry of Old Trucks Banned in Delhi

The Delhi government has clarified that from November 1, only vehicles adhering to BS-6 emission standards will be able to enter the Delhi border. Old BS-4 and BS-5 commercial vehicles will now be completely prohibited. Under this decision, vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-6 standards will no longer be allowed into the capital.

This order has been issued following directives from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The government states that this rule will be strictly enforced, and action will be taken against violators. Traffic police and the transport department have been instructed to form special teams to ensure immediate action against any non-compliance.

BS-6 Engines to Reduce Pollution

BS-6 (Bharat Stage-VI) technology is currently the most advanced engine system in India, significantly reducing harmful emissions from vehicles. This technology cuts down the emission of gases like Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) by 60–70%. This not only benefits the environment but also leads to a reduction in respiratory illnesses.

The fuel used in BS-6 engines is much cleaner and has lower sulfur content compared to previous standards. This also reduces smoke emissions from the engine. This is why the adoption of BS-6 vehicles is considered crucial for improving air quality in pollution-stricken cities like Delhi.

Why This Major Decision Was Necessary

Every year during winter, Delhi's air becomes toxic. Pollution levels cross dangerous limits due to stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and stagnant weather conditions. In such a scenario, this decision to curb vehicular pollution became the need of the hour. According to experts, vehicles contribute 40% to Delhi's total air pollution.

The government believes that if BS-6 vehicle compliance is strictly enforced, a 25-30% reduction in pollution levels is possible. This step could prove to be a significant change in providing relief to Delhi's citizens and ensuring breathable air.

Which Vehicles Have Been Exempted

The Delhi government has granted exemptions to certain categories of vehicles from this ban. These include BS-6 diesel vehicles, CNG, LNG, and electric vehicles, as well as commercial vehicles registered in Delhi. Additionally, BS-IV diesel vehicles have been granted temporary permission until October 31, 2026, to provide relief to vehicle owners during the transition period.

The government is also working towards promoting electric mobility in the capital. Plans include expanding the network of charging stations and providing subsidies for e-vehicles in the coming years. Experts suggest that if this policy continues long-term, Delhi could become the country's first "Green Transport Model" city in the coming years.
