Google is developing a new AI feature called SmartEdit for Gboard, which will allow users to perform complex editing tasks such as shortening text, changing words, deleting words, or correcting spellings during voice typing, simply by speaking.
Google: Google is once again preparing to bring revolutionary changes to its popular keyboard app, Gboard. This time, the company is focusing on making the voice typing feature smarter and more user-friendly. According to reports, Google is developing a new artificial intelligence-based feature for Gboard, called SmartEdit. This feature will not only speed up the user's typing but also make it more intuitive and accurate than ever before.
What is Gboard's new SmartEdit feature?
SmartEdit is essentially an AI-powered tool designed to improve Gboard's voice typing capabilities. Until now, Gboard users could only use limited features via voice commands, such as deleting or editing a word. But with the arrival of SmartEdit, users will also be able to perform complex editing tasks by speaking, such as shortening a sentence, changing or adding a word, capitalizing letters, and correcting spellings.
Where was the indication of SmartEdit seen?
This AI feature is still in the early stages of development, but tech website Android Authority found indications of it in the code of Gboard's beta version 15.6.2. This means that the company has started testing an early version of SmartEdit. However, this feature is not currently available to beta users. This beta code includes the name SmartEdit, along with several AI-related functions, including the facility of complex editing commands by the user during voice typing.
How will SmartEdit help in voice typing?
With SmartEdit, you will now be able to perform complex editing on Gboard simply by speaking. For example:
- Shortening the sentence: If you have spoken a long sentence, the AI can make it shorter and more effective.
- Adding or removing words: You can say - 'add ‘also’ before ‘important’' or 'remove ‘very’'.
- Changing words: For example, 'replace ‘happy’ with ‘excited’'.
- Capitalizing letters: 'capitalize the word ‘india’'.
- Correcting spellings: 'correct the spelling of ‘definately’'.
This feature will not only improve the conversation but also make the typing experience more intuitive than ever before.
Will it be for all Android users?
It is not yet clear whether this SmartEdit feature will be released for all Android users or will be exclusive to Google's Pixel devices. If it is Pixel exclusive, it is possible that it will be powered by Google's Gemini Nano AI model, which is known for on-device AI processing. Reports also suggest that this feature may be launched with the Google Pixel 10 Series. This suggests that SmartEdit could be a major USP (Unique Selling Proposition) of Google's new Pixel devices.
What will be special in the Pixel 10 series?
Apart from the SmartEdit feature, some information has also come to light regarding the Pixel 10 series. According to reports:
- Pixel 10 may come in Frost, Indigo, Lemongrass and Obsidian colors.
- Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL may be available in Jade, Moonstone, Obsidian, and Porcelain colors.
- Jade and Moonstone color options are being mentioned for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
This shows that Google is innovating not only in terms of software, but also in design and color options.
How much will Gboard change with AI?
Google has incorporated AI technology into most of its products in recent years - whether it's Magic Editor in Google Photos or AI Snapshot in Google Search. Now, by adding the SmartEdit feature to Gboard, Google is giving a clear indication that the future will be based on voice and AI. Gboard can now be seen not just as a keyboard app, but as a smart typing assistant. And if an AI-enabled feature like SmartEdit reaches a large number of users, it can give Google a new position in the field of mobile typing.
