Google Discover Introduces AI-Powered Summaries to Enhance News Reading

Google Discover is introducing a new AI summary feature, which will provide a concise summary of news articles by combining information from multiple sources. This will save users time and eliminate the need to open the full article every time.

Google Discover: In today's digital age, millions of people read news on their smartphones daily, but often they have to visit multiple websites to read the same news. To solve this problem, Google is bringing a very useful and smart feature – AI-generated summary cards. Google is preparing a major change in its popular Discover Feed, where users will see an AI-generated summary of a news article before clicking on it. This will not only save time but also allow users to access information from multiple sources in one place.

What is the new AI summary feature?

Google Discover is now introducing a new AI summary feature that will simplify the way you read news. When you open Discover, you will see a small summary card instead of a single news article. This card will provide a concise and understandable summary, compiled from 3-4 different sources, eliminating the need to read the full article.

This summary is created by Google's Artificial Intelligence (AI), so there will also be a note at the bottom indicating that there may be some errors. If users wish, they can click on the link provided to read the full article on a trusted website. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who want to save time on mobile devices and quickly get the main points.

How will this feature work?

According to reports, this new feature will appear as a new card on Google Discover.

  • The cover image on this card will be from the top story.
  • The title, publication name, and date/time will also be displayed.
  • Above this, you will see several small icons indicating the number of sources used to create the summary.

If users tap on these icons, they can read the news article on its original source.

Bookmarking will also be easier now

Google has included another essential feature in this update – a bookmarking (Save) button.

  • This button will appear between the heart and the overflow menu.
  • By tapping on it, you can bookmark any summary.
  • This content will later be saved in your bookmark activity tab.

With this feature, you can now save your favorite news articles for future reference without having to search for them repeatedly.

Better use of AI technology

Google Search has already introduced a feature called AI Overviews, which uses AI to generate answers to complex questions. Now, AI is being used with the same intent in the Discover Feed.

The main objectives are:

  • To provide users with fast and concise information.
  • To reduce the need to switch between websites repeatedly.
  • And to present news from reliable sources in one place.

Although Google is clearly stating that these summaries are generated by AI and are subject to human error, users are advised to exercise caution.

Changes in the user interface

The new user interface of Google Discover will be more accessible and easier to understand. When you view a summary card, you will see icons from several news websites simultaneously. This will immediately let you know from which sources the summary has been taken. If you want to read the full article, tap the 'See More' button to open all the original stories one by one. This new design will not only look better but also enhance your news reading experience.

Testing is ongoing, and a global launch may happen soon

Google's AI summary feature is currently in beta testing and is visible to some users on both Android and iOS platforms. This means Google is first testing the feature with a limited number of people to see if it works correctly. Although Google has not officially launched it yet, reports suggest that this feature may be released globally to all users soon. After this update, Google Discover will not just be a news feed but will become an AI-based news assistant that will make your news reading experience even smarter.
