Google’s name originated from a spelling error during domain registration after its founders initially developed the search engine under the name Backrub at Stanford University.
The development of the search engine began in 1995 at Stanford University, where two students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, sought to create a system that could search and organise information on the internet more efficiently. In the early stages, their ideas often differed and led to debates, but their differing perspectives eventually formed a partnership that later produced one of the world’s largest search engines.
In the initial phase, the two students worked from their hostel rooms on a search system designed to analyse the links between websites. The system evaluated a website’s importance and popularity based on how many other websites linked to it. Because the system analysed backlinks between pages, the search engine was originally named Backrub.
After some time, the founders concluded that the name Backrub was not suitable. They began searching for a new name and considered “Googol,” a mathematical term representing the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name was intended to represent the ability of the search engine to handle vast amounts of information on the internet.
The final name emerged during a domain availability check. A student named Sean Anderson accidentally typed “Google” instead of “Googol.” Although it was a simple typographical error, the domain google.com was available. Larry Page approved the name, and the domain was registered within hours, establishing the name Google.
Google was officially founded on 4 September 1998. The company began operations from a small garage before expanding into a global technology company. Today, Google operates not only as a search engine but also provides services including Gmail, Google Maps, cloud services, and other digital platforms used by billions of people worldwide.
Although the company was founded on 4 September, it celebrates its anniversary each year on 27 September, marking its achievements and contributions to the development of the internet.
