Haldwani Stage Purification Row Escalates as Rahul Gandhi Targets BJP RSS

esident Mallikarjun Kharge’s August 8 rally. Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-RSS of promoting ‘Manuvadi thinking’, while BJP president J.P. Nadda called the incident sad and promised an investigation and action against those found responsible.

A controversy has emerged over the alleged ‘purification’ of a stage in Haldwani after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting there. The Congress has linked the incident to caste discrimination and alleged insult of Dalits, while BJP president and Union minister J.P. Nadda has called the incident sad and said the matter will be investigated and action will be taken against those found responsible.

Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a Congress public meeting at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani on August 8. The event was organised as part of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttarakhand. Two days later, on August 10, reports emerged that a ‘purification’ ritual had allegedly been conducted at the same venue.

According to reports, people associated with the Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas conducted a religious ritual on the stage. The organisation had reportedly objected to some slogans raised during the programme and to the political use of the stage.

After the incident came to light, the Congress described it as a symbol of social discrimination and questioned the ideology of the BJP and RSS.

However, political allegations regarding the BJP’s direct involvement in the alleged purification and claims made by people associated with the organisation differ. The BJP has distanced itself from any such activity and said the matter would be investigated.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha. He said that the alleged purification of the stage after the Haldwani meeting made him feel the pain of untouchability and social discrimination. Kharge said he had not made any remarks against any caste or religion in his speech.

Kharge described the incident as more than a matter of personal insult and linked it to the constitutional values of equality and opposition to untouchability. The Congress has demanded legal action if any individual or organisation carried out the act with an intention of caste discrimination.

The issue also intensified the political debate between the government and opposition in Parliament. Congress leaders described it as an issue concerning Dalit dignity, while the BJP condemned the incident and distanced itself from it.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP and RSS over the incident. He alleged that the alleged purification of the stage after Kharge’s Haldwani meeting was not only an insult to the Congress president but also an insult to the Indian Constitution.

Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-RSS of promoting ‘Manuvadi thinking’ and said the Constitution has declared untouchability an offence. He presented the incident as an issue extending beyond an individual case.

The Congress leader also said the party would raise the issue across the country. The Congress has said that Satyagraha programmes would be held in different districts.

BJP president and Union minister J.P. Nadda responded to the controversy in the Rajya Sabha, saying that what happened to Kharge, or the sentiments that were hurt, was sad not only for the Congress but for the entire country. He made it clear that the BJP does not support any such activity.

Nadda said the matter would be thoroughly investigated. If any person is found guilty in the investigation, strict action would be taken against them. He also appealed to Kharge not to politicise the matter.

The Haldwani incident has brought caste, social equality and discrimination in public life into the political debate. The Congress has placed Kharge’s Dalit background at the centre of the controversy and alleged that the purification of the stage reflected a mindset of social discrimination.

The organisation linked to the incident has cited separate objections concerning the political programme and the use of the stage. The allegations and the facts of the incident therefore remain subject to investigation.

The Constitution of India abolishes untouchability and makes its practice in any form an offence.

Mallikarjun Kharge is among the senior leaders of the Congress and became the party’s national president in 2022. He is the Congress’s second Dalit president. Before him, Babu Jagjivan Ram served as Congress president during 1970-71.

Kharge began his political career in Karnataka. He remained active in state politics for a long period and was elected as a legislator several times. He later entered national politics and won Lok Sabha elections from Gulbarga, now also known as Kalaburagi.

After 2014, he served as the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha. After losing the 2019 Lok Sabha election, he entered the Rajya Sabha and also served as Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House. Since becoming Congress president in 2022, he has remained one of the party’s leading national figures.

The Haldwani controversy comes amid continued political confrontation between the Congress and BJP on several issues. The Congress is raising the incident as an issue of social justice, Dalit dignity and protection of the Constitution, while the BJP has condemned the incident and promised an investigation.

Following Rahul Gandhi’s statement, the Congress has indicated that it plans to take the issue to different parts of the country through Satyagraha programmes.

The investigation is expected to establish who participated in the alleged purification programme in Haldwani, under whose direction it was organised and what its actual purpose was. The BJP has said an investigation will be conducted, with further action to be determined by its findings.

The Congress is describing the incident as an issue concerning the Constitution and Dalit dignity, while the BJP has called it sad and distanced itself from any discriminatory activity.
