On Tuesday, July 29th, a dispute arose between two villages in the Barsar area of Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh, due to differences regarding the cremation of a Dalit man. The crematorium in Nanawan village was waterlogged due to heavy rains, leading the deceased's family to decide to perform the last rites at the crematorium in the nearby Bhevad Saheli village.

Objection to the Use of Crematorium Increases Tension

Some local residents of Bhevad Saheli village objected to this, leading to a heated argument between the people of both villages. The matter gradually became tense, and considering the possibility of a clash, a team of police and administration was sent to the spot. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, the officials immediately intervened and calmed both sides down.

The funeral was conducted peacefully due to the proactiveness of the administration. During this time, the administration clarified that in an emergency situation, no citizen can be prevented from using the crematorium. They said that in such sensitive situations, all communities should adopt a sympathetic attitude towards each other.

Administration Active Towards a Permanent Solution

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rajendra Gautam said that the matter was resolved peacefully without any major incident due to the promptness of the police and administration. He said that the administration has taken steps towards a permanent solution so that such a situation does not arise again in the future.

Instructions have been given to the local administration to identify government land for an alternative crematorium for Nanawan village and start its construction work as soon as possible. This will prevent any kind of social disagreement or conflict situation in the future.

This case shows that both the vigilance of the administration and the understanding of the citizens are necessary to maintain social harmony.
