Under the Seventh Pay Commission, the starting basic salary for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers is the same, though total earnings and allowances vary depending on posting location and country of assignment.
The initial basic salary for both IAS and IFS officers begins at ₹56,100 per month under the Seventh Pay Commission. With experience and promotions, the basic salary can increase to ₹2.5 lakh.
IAS officers are posted within India at the state and central government levels. Their compensation includes allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA), and medical benefits.

IFS officers are frequently posted abroad. In addition to the basic salary, they receive foreign allowances, including foreign allowance and hardship allowance, along with other international facilities associated with overseas postings.
When posted within India, the total in-hand salary for both IAS and IFS officers is typically about ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh per month, depending on allowances and postings.
However, when IFS officers are posted overseas, the total salary can rise to ₹3 lakh to ₹4 lakh per month or more. The overall salary and allowances depend on the country of posting and the specific assignment.
IAS officers are provided government accommodation, an official vehicle, a driver, and security. IFS officers posted abroad receive residential accommodation, education support for children, and international-standard facilities.
Both services also include medical benefits and pension provisions.
