Semiconductor Projects: The Government of India has taken a major step to strengthen the semiconductor industry. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved four new semiconductor projects in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. These projects will involve a total investment of ₹4594 crore. This will give new strength to India's semiconductor manufacturing sector and boost the country's self-reliance.
Expansion of Investment in the Semiconductor Sector
The central government has already approved six projects in the semiconductor sector. Now, these projects have been joined by four more. In this way, a total of ten projects will be active, in which approximately ₹1.60 lakh crore will be invested. This investment is spread across six states and reflects the strength of India's semiconductor industry.
Location and Investment Details of the Projects
The four newly approved projects will be established in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. SiCSem and 3D Glass Solutions will establish their factories in Odisha. Continental Device India Limited (CDIL) will expand in Punjab, and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies will start production in Andhra Pradesh. These projects will involve a total investment of ₹4594 crore.
Employment Opportunities from New Projects
According to the government, these four new projects will directly create approximately 2,034 skilled jobs. In addition, many indirect employment opportunities will also be generated. This will not only provide employment to local youth but also increase the number of experts working in the semiconductor sector.
Information on Major Companies and Technology
SiCSem will build India's first commercial compound semiconductor wafer factory. This will be in partnership with UK-based Clas-SiC company. 3D Glass Solutions will build a modern packaging and embedded glass substrate plant. ASIP will undertake semiconductor packaging in collaboration with South Korea's APAC Technology. CDIL will expand the production of high-power devices in Punjab.
India's Self-Reliance in the Semiconductor Sector
The government's plan is to make India self-reliant in the matter of semiconductors. It is necessary to meet the growing demand for semiconductors in the country's telecommunications, automotive, data center, consumer electronics, and industrial sectors. These new projects will provide b support to these sectors. India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) campaign will also prove to be a major step in this direction.
