The Indian Postal Department will discontinue the registered post service from October 1, 2025, and will introduce registered speed post. The new service will provide faster delivery with legal recognition and will be connected to air transport. Postmen have been equipped with smartphones and apps to provide digital and prompt service to customers.
Registered Post Service: In a significant step towards modernizing postal services, the Indian Postal Department has announced the discontinuation of the registered post service. According to a notification issued on August 18, it will be replaced by the registered speed post service starting October 1, 2025. This new service will merge with speed post to ensure faster and more secure delivery. While registered post was previously used to send legal notices, court summons, and other important documents, this service will now become more reliable with air transport and mobile app tracking facilities.
Registered Speed Post to Replace Registered Post
Until now, people have been using registered post to send court summons, legal notices, government correspondence, and important documents. However, this service will not be available from October 1. It will be replaced by a new service called registered speed post. It will have the same legal recognition as registered post, but the delivery will be faster and more secure.
The notification states that "Registration will now be available only as a value-added service for Speed Post articles and will facilitate addressee-specific delivery."
Why the Change?
The Indian Postal Department stated that this decision has been taken in accordance with the changing needs of customers and market demands. Previously, the registered post service operated via road and rail, which caused delays in the delivery of letters and documents. In the new system, speed post and registered post will be combined into a single service. Documents will be sent by air, which will speed up delivery.
The Indian Postal Department is constantly connecting itself with modern technology. Postmen have now been given smartphones with the Postman Mobile App (PMA) installed. With the help of this app, postal employees can record delivery information and send messages directly to the receiver. This has made the delivery process more transparent and reliable.
Smartphone Facility for Employees
Approximately 1.8 lakh postal employees across the country have been provided with smartphones by the department. In addition, 21,000 employees are using their personal smartphones. After this change, the process of sending letters and documents will be completely digitally recorded. Customers will also be able to easily track the status of their post.
Benefits of Registered Speed Post
After the launch of registered speed post, the delivery time will be significantly reduced. Previously, registered post letters were sent via rail and road, which took several days to reach their destination. But now letters and documents will be sent by air. In this way, important letters and notices will reach faster than before.
The new service will also include features such as a tracking system and addressee-specific delivery. This means that the document will only be handed over to the designated person and the information will be recorded immediately.
Court summons, notices from government departments, and legal documents were previously sent only through registered post. Now, registered speed post will handle this responsibility. This will also speed up the work of courts and government offices.
Changes to be Implemented from October 1
The Indian Postal Department has clarified that the registered post service will be completely discontinued from October 1. After this, people will only have the option of registered speed post. This service will assure customers of even faster delivery with the same legal recognition as the old registered post.
