Jamia Hamdard University Withdraws MBBS and PG Medical Seats, Leaving Students in Uncertainty

It's disheartening news for students in Delhi aspiring to pursue MBBS and PG medical courses. Jamia Hamdard University has decided to withdraw all its 150 MBBS and 49 PG medical seats for the academic session 2025-26.

MBBS or PG: This news is extremely disappointing for medical students in Delhi-NCR. The renowned Jamia Hamdard University has decided to cancel all MBBS and PG medical seats at its prestigious medical college, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), for the academic session 2025-26. This step has been taken due to financial irregularities and administrative interference, leaving the future of hundreds of students uncertain.

150 MBBS and 49 PG Seats Cancelled

This decision by Jamia Hamdard comes at a time when NEET counseling is scheduled to begin on July 21st. The university has clarified that 150 MBBS and 49 PG medical seats will no longer be available for the upcoming academic session. This will directly impact the students who had chosen HIMSR as their primary preference.

The provisional seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC) shows no seats for HIMSR. This directly indicates that the medical college is currently not recognized for MBBS or PG courses. This college was established in 2012 under Jamia Hamdard and is now facing a serious financial and administrative crisis.

Weakened Administrative Control

The severity of this issue can be gauged from the fact that the Registrar of Jamia Hamdard University sent a letter to the NMC on June 6, 2025, clarifying that due to certain private interferences, the university is no longer able to control HIMSR's online portal and admission process. As a result, the university decided to voluntarily disaffiliate from the recognition of MBBS and PG medical seats.

Vice-Chancellor's Statement: Repeated Warnings Issued

Prof. Mohammed Afshar Alam, the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, made a serious comment on this matter, stating: HIMSR was repeatedly instructed to follow the UGC guidelines, but the college management consistently ignored them. The university fully adheres to the UGC guidelines and, keeping the future of the students in mind, hopes for positive intervention from the court.

At the root of this entire dispute are the financial irregularities of the Hamdard Education Society and the HAH Centenary Hospital associated with HIMSR. According to the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report, a sum of ₹813 crore was transferred to the Hamdard Education Society between 2011 and 2023 — a clear violation of UGC rules. The report described this fund transfer as a misuse of resources and against the interests of students and staff.

Disappointment Among Students, Concern Among Parents

This decision has caused deep disappointment among students preparing for medical studies from Delhi and surrounding areas. Many students had prioritized HIMSR in NEET counseling, considering it a reliable institution. Now their options for seat allotment have become limited. Parents are also uneasy and worried by this decision. They believe that students should not be punished for administrative and financial failures. Many are demanding government intervention to save the future of deserving students.

Currently, HIMSR is not permitted to initiate any new admission process for the academic session 2025-26. Jamia Hamdard University has stated that it will challenge this decision in court. If relief is granted by the court, HIMSR may become active in medical education again in the coming years, but for now, this college is out of NEET counseling 2025.
