Political activity is likely to intensify soon in Jammu and Kashmir, as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah prepares for a cabinet expansion. According to sources connected to the National Conference, four new faces could be included in the cabinet in this expansion.
Srinagar: A significant change is once again on the horizon in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is likely to undertake the long-awaited expansion of his cabinet by the end of this week. According to reliable sources within the National Conference (NC), four new faces are expected to be sworn in as ministers in the upcoming cabinet expansion, while the departure of one current minister is considered almost certain.
Current Scenario and Constitutional Position
Currently, the Jammu and Kashmir government has a total of six ministers, including the Chief Minister, while constitutional provisions allow for a maximum of ten ministers in the cabinet. Thus, four seats remain vacant, which are now being prepared to be filled. Interestingly, the Congress party will not be given a place in the cabinet this time either, making the balance of power within the NC even more important.
These Leaders Could Become New Ministers
- Tanveer Sadiq (Zadibal, Srinagar): Tanveer Sadiq, the chief spokesperson of the National Conference and a close associate of Omar Abdullah, is almost certain to be given a place in the cabinet. Sadiq is one of the party's young faces and has played an influential role in the politics of Srinagar city.
- Farooq Shah (Tangmarg): Former IAS officer and MLA from Tangmarg in North Kashmir, Farooq Shah, could be given the responsibility of the Tourism and Public Works Department (PWD). Shah has a long history of administrative experience, which makes him a b face in the cabinet.
- Dr. Bashir Veeri (Bijbehara): Dr. Veeri, a physician by profession and an experienced leader, could be assigned the charge of the Health and Medical Education Department. According to party sources, current minister Sakina Ittoo will be removed from her department and Veeri will be given the new responsibility.
- Mian Mehar Ali (Kangan): Mian Mehar Ali, the son of influential Gujjar leader and MP Mian Altaf Ahmed, is also highly likely to be given a place in the cabinet. His appointment will provide political representation and empowerment to the Gujjar community.
Discussion on Kaiser Jamsheed Lone's Entry Also
There is also discussion about giving a ministerial post to Kaiser Jamsheed Lone, who has been an MLA from Lolab three times. However, due to opposition from the Chief Minister's advisor Nasir Sogami, there are some differences regarding his appointment. Both leaders come from the Lolab region, and Sogami lost the previous assembly election. If Lone is made a minister, it would be a move to challenge Sogami's influence.
Will Satish Sharma Be Removed?
According to information, current minister Satish Sharma may be removed from the cabinet due to his lackluster performance and pressure from senior party leaders. Sharma won the election from the Chhamb seat as an independent and later joined the National Conference. Dissatisfaction with his role within the party has already been expressed.
