Cloudbursts Cause Havoc in Several Districts
In the last four days, three major cloudburst incidents in Jammu and Kashmir have caused widespread devastation. The largest incident occurred on August 14 in Chisoti village of Kishtwar district, where a sudden flash flood wreaked havoc. This tragedy has resulted in 61 deaths so far, with over 116 people injured. Around 82 people are still reported missing, most of whom are pilgrims and one CISF jawan.
In addition, on August 17, cloudburst and landslide incidents occurred in the Jodh Valley and Janglot areas of Kathua district. These accidents resulted in 7 deaths and 5 injuries. The continuous natural disasters have spread panic among local residents and increased pressure on the administration.
Appeal to People to Remain Vigilant
The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and the possibility of cloudbursts across Jammu and Kashmir until August 19. It has also warned of the risk of flash floods and landslides. All districts in the Jammu division and some areas of Kashmir are likely to be the most affected.
The administration has appealed to people not to go near rivers and streams and to stay away from landslide-prone areas. The government has stated that the situation is being continuously monitored and that preparations are complete to deal with any emergency.
Relief and Rescue Operations Underway
NDRF teams and local administration are continuously engaged in relief and rescue operations in the affected areas of Kishtwar and Kathua. The search for missing persons is ongoing, and the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
However, due to adverse weather, continuous rainfall, and landslides, many roads have been closed, hindering rescue operations. Despite this, local people are also assisting the administration and cooperating in relief efforts.
