The Income Tax Department on Wednesday conducted large-scale raids at the residence and establishments of Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Umashankar Singh, a three-time legislator from Ballia. Security was tightened in Lucknow and Ballia following the action.
Raids in Lucknow and Ballia
More than three dozen Income Tax Department officials reached Singh’s residence and office in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, and began examining documents. A team of over 50 officials scrutinised electronic devices, files and records during the operation. In Ballia, police and Enforcement Directorate teams were present at his plant and establishments. Officials closed the gates and did not allow anyone to enter the premises.
Singh, described as a Member of Parliament and a leader from Ballia, has been associated with several large construction projects through his firm PW. Through his company ‘Chhatra Shakti’, he has been in discussion in connection with construction work and matters related to illegal mining. The Income Tax action has intensified political activity, and political parties may issue statements on the matter.

Focus of the Investigation
According to sources, the Income Tax Department is examining documents related to financial transactions and assets. The department has begun a detailed analysis of income tax and financial records. The objective of the raid is to determine whether there has been any tax evasion, irregular financial transactions or discrepancies related to assets. No official statement has been issued by the department so far.

Umashankar Singh has been elected for a third consecutive term from the Rasra Assembly constituency in Ballia. He is battling cancer but remains active in political activities. His political career and local standing are considered b. His firm PW has been involved in major construction projects in several parts of the country, and his financial activities are under scrutiny.
Security During the Raids
According to official sources, heavy police deployment and security arrangements were made in Lucknow and Ballia during the raids. Ballia police cordoned off the area around the MLA’s residence and plant and restricted movement. The Income Tax Department team examined documents as well as digital devices during the operation.
