New Delhi: Advocate Ramashankar Sharma, President of the Rajiv Gandhi Bar Association, stated on Wednesday that the hearing on his petition against BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut regarding her alleged objectionable comments against farmers and freedom fighters has now resumed. The case has been reopened after he filed a review petition. This means that the sedition case against Kangana Ranaut will proceed, and the legal process will now continue.
What is the Case?
Advocate Sharma explained that he had filed a petition in the local court of Agra on September 11, 2024. The petition alleged that Kangana Ranaut shared a post on social media that insulted the farming community and made seditious remarks against freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi.
According to Sharma, the court sent notices multiple times, but neither Kangana nor any of her representatives submitted a response. The court also gave Kangana another opportunity to present her side, but there was no response from her.
Court Proceedings and Review of the Petition
Due to the lack of response from Kangana, the court issued an order on January 9, 2025, directing the police to submit a detailed report to the court based on all the evidence presented by the petitioner. The petitioner submitted social media posts, documents, and other proofs to the court. However, due to procedural delays and Kangana's failure to respond, the case was initially dismissed. Subsequently, Advocate Sharma filed a review petition, which the court accepted, and now the hearing of the case is set to resume.
Ramashankar Sharma stated that the purpose of his petition is to ensure a thorough judicial investigation of the matter. He informed that the court has listed it for a fresh hearing. The next hearing in this case is likely to take place in the coming weeks. Kangana Ranaut's social media statements have previously sparked controversy and legal debate on numerous occasions.
