A newborn theft attempt at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ghatampur, Kanpur, has led to an investigation into the alleged involvement of an officer and an ANM. The newborn was rescued after the mother raised an alarm when a woman posing as a nurse allegedly tried to take the child away.

According to available reports, the accused woman approached the mother and her newborn in the maternity ward while posing as a nurse or health worker. She allegedly used the pretext of conducting a check-up to take the baby from the mother and then attempted to leave the hospital with the newborn.

The mother became suspicious of the woman's activities and raised an alarm. Relatives and security personnel at the hospital immediately intervened and caught the woman before she could leave the premises with the child. Police were informed and subsequently took the accused woman into custody.

The case has taken a further turn after an officer's name reportedly emerged in connection with the alleged plan. It is alleged that a deal worth Rs 5 lakh had been reached with an ANM to facilitate the theft of the newborn from the government hospital.

Police are investigating who was allegedly involved in the deal, how the money was to be transferred and where the newborn was allegedly intended to be taken after the theft attempt.

The alleged involvement of an officer has also raised questions about possible collusion involving people connected with the government health system. However, the allegations can be established only on the basis of the police investigation and available evidence.

CCTV footage from the hospital is expected to be relevant to the investigation. The footage can help establish how the woman entered the hospital, whom she contacted, her movements inside the premises and the route she allegedly intended to take while leaving with the newborn.

Ghatampur police had taken the CCTV footage into custody as part of the investigation. Police are also seeking to establish how long the woman had been inside the hospital and whether she had contacted other people before attempting to take the child.

The role of the ANM is also expected to be examined in the investigation. If the alleged Rs 5 lakh deal is established, police will seek to determine between whom the amount was agreed and what assistance was allegedly to be provided in return.

The activities and roles of hospital employees may also be examined. Mobile phones, call records, chats and digital evidence relating to any alleged financial transaction could form part of the investigation. Bank transactions and other financial records may also be examined if they are relevant to the alleged deal.

Police have begun questioning the accused woman after taking her into custody. Investigators are seeking to determine at whose direction she allegedly came to the hospital and where the child was allegedly to be taken.

If the investigation establishes that another person had instructed or assisted her, police may seek to identify and question that person. Investigators will also examine whether the incident involved an individual attempt or the participation of more people.

The incident has raised questions about security arrangements at the government health centre, particularly access to the maternity ward. The alleged entry of a woman posing as a health worker and her attempt to leave with a newborn have prompted scrutiny of visitor monitoring, ward access, employee identification and the role of security personnel.

The incident also prompted concern among relatives of other women admitted to the hospital. Families have sought greater vigilance regarding the identification of people entering the premises and preventing unauthorised access to the maternity ward.

The investigation will examine CCTV footage, the accused woman's statements, statements from hospital employees and relatives, and any digital or financial evidence connected with the alleged deal. These pieces of evidence will be assessed to determine who was involved in the attempted theft and the nature of the alleged Rs 5 lakh transaction.

At this stage, it would be premature to hold any individual responsible. Allegations concerning the officer or ANM will have to be established on the basis of evidence collected during the police investigation, and statements from the accused parties will also form part of the inquiry.

The newborn is safe after the mother's alarm led relatives and security personnel to intervene and prevent the woman from leaving the hospital with the child.
