Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister and President of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who was a symbol of struggle, power, and courage, has died at the age of 80. The BNP announced her passing via a post on the social media platform X. The party stated that the veteran and senior leader of Bangladesh breathed her last after battling several long-standing health issues.
Death After Prolonged Illness
Khaleda Zia had been hospitalized for the past 36 days. She was admitted to the hospital on November 23rd complaining of infections in her heart and lungs. Her condition deteriorated continuously during treatment, and she was shifted to ventilator support on December 11th. She was also suffering from pneumonia, which further aggravated her condition.
According to doctors, Khaleda Zia required regular kidney dialysis. The medical board described her condition as “extremely critical” and she was kept on life support. Her health rapidly declined when dialysis was stopped.

BNP Confirms, Appeals for Prayers
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) confirmed her death in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The party statement said,
“The President of BNP, former Prime Minister and National Leader Begum Khaleda Zia passed away this morning after the Fajr prayers. The party has appealed to the countrymen and supporters to pray for the peace of her soul. The news of her death has spread a wave of grief among her supporters across Bangladesh and around the world.”
According to media reports, preparations were made to take Khaleda Zia abroad for better treatment earlier this month. However, this was not possible due to her extremely weak health. Previously, she had been battling several serious illnesses, including liver, kidney, diabetes, arthritis, and eye-related problems.
This year, on May 6th, Khaleda Zia returned to Bangladesh from London, where she had received about four months of advanced medical treatment. Despite this, her health did not improve permanently.
Khaleda Zia’s Political Journey
Khaleda Zia has been a b and decisive figure in Bangladeshi politics. She was the wife of former President and Prime Minister Ziaur Rahman, who founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). After her husband’s death, Khaleda Zia took over the leadership of the party and made it a major political force in the country.
She served as Prime Minister in 1991, 1996, and 2001. During her tenure, she prioritized democracy, nationalism, and development. The BNP remained active as the main opposition party during the long rule of Sheikh Hasina. The BNP boycotted the 2024 general elections and raised the issue of nationalism, accusing the then-government of being too close to India. Additionally, the party announced its candidates for 237 seats on December 3rd, in anticipation of the general elections proposed for February 2026.
Following Khaleda Zia’s death, discussions have intensified in political circles regarding the future and leadership of the BNP. For her supporters, this is not just the loss of a leader, but the passing of an ideology and a symbol of struggle.
