Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju questioned the conduct and political approach of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, stating that Gandhi’s thinking is influenced by his “activist” advisers and that he speaks as per their direction.
Speaking at the Times Now Summit in New Delhi, Rijiju criticised Gandhi for attending Parliament in a T-shirt and raised concerns over his political style. He said Gandhi’s mind has been “hijacked” by his activist advisers, and that he articulates positions determined by them.
Rijiju stated that he has no personal issue with Rahul Gandhi and interacts with him both inside and outside formal settings. However, he said that while speaking in Parliament, it is necessary to adhere to established traditions, rules, and decorum. He added that in a parliamentary democracy, following rules is the responsibility of all leaders.
The minister said Gandhi’s conduct reflects the influence of activist advisers, which, according to him, explains his statements in Parliament. Rijiju also said that when the Bharatiya Janata Party was in the opposition, it followed rules and carried out protests without exceeding limits.

He said that as Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi should pay particular attention to conduct and attire. Rijiju noted that Gandhi often appears in Parliament in casual clothing, which, according to him, indicates difficulty in understanding rules and decorum. He said dignified attire and appropriate conduct are necessary for maintaining the dignity of the office.
Citing former Communist leader Somnath Chatterjee, Rijiju said that before becoming Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Chatterjee wore loose shirts and sandals, but adopted a more formal and serious style after assuming office. He said the Leader of Opposition should dress in accordance with the dignity of the position, as it represents the entire opposition.
Rijiju said he is not raising a personal objection to wearing a T-shirt but emphasised that respect for the office is necessary. He added that Rahul Gandhi could conduct himself in a more appropriate manner, including maintaining proper attire and decorum. The minister also said Gandhi opposes every achievement of the government and questions its successes.
Rijiju praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, his work for the poor, and India’s growing global stature. He said criticism is important in a democracy, but credibility is equally significant. He added that while criticism by opposition leaders is part of democratic functioning, their conduct and approach should reflect responsibility and decorum.
Referring to an all-party meeting held on Wednesday on the West Asia crisis, Rijiju said that despite differences in public discourse, the meeting reflected maturity. He said opposition leaders raised their concerns and the government took note of them. He added that all parties agreed to stand united in the challenging situation, although the Trinamool Congress did not participate.
