A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding the sensational gang-rape of an LLB student in Kolkata. Supreme Court advocate Satyam Singh filed the petition on Monday, June 30, 2025, demanding a CBI investigation into the case under court supervision.
Student Sexual Assault Case: The case of the gang-rape of an LLB student in Kolkata has now reached the highest court of the country. Supreme Court advocate Satyam Singh filed a petition on Monday (June 30, 2025) seeking an impartial investigation of this serious case under CBI supervision. The petitioner has appealed to the court to ensure that the investigation of this incident is completed within a stipulated time frame and that the victim is provided with appropriate security and compensation.
The incident came to light on June 25, when a first-year student of South Calcutta Law College accused two of her senior college mates and a former student of gang-rape. Following this accusation, there was political upheaval in Kolkata and the whole of West Bengal.
Controversial statements by Trinamool leaders also included in the petition
The petition specifically mentions the statements of Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra, in which they allegedly made insulting and insensitive remarks about the victim. The petitioner argues that such statements by the leaders can affect the investigation and hurt the victim's self-respect.
Political parties held protests
This incident has also caused a stir in the state's politics. The Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have bly criticized the state government. On Sunday, the Congress held a rally in the Khidirpur area, while the BJP Yuva Morcha workers held a protest march in Hatibagan. The protesters criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the declining security of women in West Bengal.
Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, marched in Kolkata with party workers on Sunday and bly demanded 'security for our daughters'. He said that such incidents against women in Bengal will not stop until Mamata Banerjee is removed from power. The Chief Minister protects the criminals and questions the character of the victimized women.
Seeking justice from the Supreme Court
The petition filed by advocate Satyam Singh states that a fair investigation is difficult in this case due to political pressure and police inaction. He argued that if the CBI investigates under court supervision, the chances of the victim getting justice would increase. The petition also mentions that the victim and her family are constantly receiving threats, putting their lives at risk. In such a situation, it is very important to arrange security.
The ruling Trinamool Congress's problems are seemingly increasing over this incident. Opposition parties have held protests and meetings in various places across the state, cornering the state government. The Marxist Communist Party (CPM) and several civil organizations have also accused the government of negligence and said that the security system for women in Bengal has completely collapsed.
However, the state government says that the police are taking swift action in this case and that no culprit will be spared. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that violence against women will not be tolerated at all.
