Kumkum Mohod Wins India’s 17th Gold at Asian Games 2026 After Shoot-Off Victory

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod defeated South Korea’s Yejin Oh in a shoot-off to win the women’s recurve individual gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won India’s 17th gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating South Korea’s Yejin Oh in the women’s recurve individual final following a shoot-off.

The women’s recurve individual final was held on October 3, with Kumkum Mohod and South Korea’s Yejin Oh engaged in a closely fought contest. Kumkum lost the opening set 27-29, while the second set ended 29-29.

Kumkum responded in the third set by scoring a perfect 30 from her three arrows. Yejin Oh scored 29, bringing the match to 3-3. Kumkum then lost the fourth set 27-28, leaving the outcome to the fifth set.

In the decisive fifth set, Kumkum again scored 30 out of 30. The five-set contest ended level at 5-5, requiring a shoot-off under the rules.

Both archers were given one arrow each, with the winner determined by which arrow landed closer to the centre of the target. Yejin Oh’s arrow scored 8 points after landing farther from the centre. Kumkum then placed her arrow closer to the centre to secure the gold medal for India.

The 17-year-old has maintained a b run at the 2026 Asian Games. Before winning gold in the women’s recurve individual event, she had already won another gold medal and a silver medal. Her total at the competition now stands at three medals, comprising two gold and one silver.

Indian archers have won medals in several events at the 2026 Asian Games. South Korea has traditionally been regarded as a leading force in archery, and Indian athletes have recorded successes against South Korean competitors at the competition.

According to the figures provided for the 2026 Asian Games, India has won 77 medals, including 17 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze. India is fifth in the medal table.

China is first with 317 medals, including 162 gold. Japan is second with 240 medals, including 72 gold. South Korea is third with 135 medals, including 33 gold. Uzbekistan is fourth with 65 medals, including 20 gold.
