Donwa Lapang's Political Career and Achievements
Donwa Lapang was born on April 10, 1932. He began his political journey in 1972 by winning an election from the Nongpoh seat as an independent candidate. Subsequently, Lapang served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya four times, from 1992 to 2010. Lapang was a loyal member of the Congress party for a long time, but in 2018, he joined the National People's Party (NPP), thereby maintaining his presence in state politics. In recent years, he was serving as the Chief Advisor to the Meghalaya government.
One of the most significant contributions in his political journey was his role in the formation of the Ri-Bhoi district, which came into existence in 1992. Additionally, Lapang took many important initiatives for the development and social justice of Meghalaya.
Lapang's Childhood Was Very Simple
Donwa Lapang had a very simple childhood. He helped run a tea shop with his family and worked as a laborer, teacher, and government employee in his youth. Despite a humble beginning in life, he built a long and successful career in politics through his diligent and honest approach. His humility and devotion to the people made him popular as 'Maheh'. He was always considered a leader who stayed connected with the masses.
As the news of Lapang's death spread, former MP and Congress leader Vincent H. Pala, along with other political figures and the general public, expressed their grief. People gathered at the hospital and his residence in Nongpoh to pay their last respects. The Meghalaya government has announced a state funeral in his honor on Monday. This funeral will be a significant occasion for the state, where leaders, citizens, and his supporters will pay homage to him.
