A significant controversy has emerged surrounding Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman's involvement in the IPL 2026. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released him from the team following instructions from the BCCI.
Sports News: Mustafizur Rahman is unlikely to receive any payment following the termination of his contract with Kolkata Knight Riders, as he had no role in the team during this period. Kolkata released the Bangladesh fast bowler at the direction of the BCCI. The franchise had purchased him for INR 9.20 crore in the IPL auction.
The Indian cricket control board has not provided a detailed reason for this decision, stating only that the step became necessary due to “developments taking place all around.” However, this decision has sparked a new debate regarding player rights, as Mustafizur neither withdrew from the tournament himself nor was he accused of any wrongdoing. Despite this, sources indicate that the possibility of compensation for him under current insurance (coverage) rules is almost non-existent.
Why will compensation not be provided?
According to IPL and BCCI rules, the salary and compensation of foreign players are based on insurance terms. An IPL source told PTI that, generally, if a foreign player is injured during the tournament or is unable to play matches due to a cricket-related reason, the franchise pays their salary. Typically, up to 50 percent of the salary is paid under insurance.
However, Mustafizur’s case does not fall under this condition. He was removed from the team not due to injury or a cricket-related reason, but on the instructions of the BCCI. Therefore, KKR is not legally obligated to pay him any money. The source said, “It is unfortunate, but Mustafiz has no option but to pursue legal recourse.”
The IPL falls under the purview of Indian law. No foreign cricketer would want to go through such a situation, and players generally do not resort to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

What did the BCCI say?
The BCCI has not publicly stated any clear reason behind this decision. The board has only said that the step became necessary due to recent developments. However, this statement has raised many questions among players and fans, as Mustafizur neither withdrew from the tournament himself nor was he accused of any indiscipline.
Insurance and salary arrangements are generally in place for foreign players in the IPL. If a player participates in the tournament and gets injured, the franchise provides them with compensation under insurance. Conversely, for domestic players, there are BCCI’s Central Contracted rules, in which payments are more secure.
