The Mahakaleshwar Temple of Ujjain is famous throughout the country, but did you know that within the same temple complex, there is another mysterious and very special temple, whose doors open for only one day a year? We are talking about the Nagchandreshwar Temple, where Lord Shiva is seated with Goddess Parvati on the bed of Nagraj (the king of snakes). This sight is not seen anywhere else.
Temple Doors Open on Nag Panchami
In the year 2025, Nag Panchami falls on July 29th. On this day, the doors of the Nagchandreshwar Temple will be opened to devotees for 24 hours. From the very beginning of Nag Panchami, a huge crowd of devotees throngs the temple. It is believed that any devotee who visits on this day gets relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh (a specific astrological condition). This temple remains completely closed to the general public on ordinary days.
The Temple's Idol is Special and Ancient
The most significant feature of the Nagchandreshwar Temple is its idol. Here, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are seated on the bed formed by the hood of Nagraj. This idol is believed to be from the 11th century and is believed to have been brought from Nepal. Just as Lord Vishnu is believed to be seated on the Sheshnag, this is a unique and rare image of Shiva, which is only found in this temple.
This Sanctum Sanctorum is Situated at a Height
This temple is located on the main peak of the Mahakal Temple, which is not easy for the general public to reach. This is the reason why it is opened for only one day, and the arrangement for darshan (worship) is done entirely under administrative supervision. The temple gate is opened from 3 am and darshan takes place until 12 am.
Special Worship is Performed on Nag Panchami
On July 29th, on the day of Nag Panchami, special worship is performed in the temple with specific rituals. Trikal Puja, Abhishek (ritual bathing of the idol), and special aarti (prayer ceremony) are performed. On this day, thousands of devotees reach Ujjain so that they can have darshan of Lord Nagchandreshwar and get rid of their problems.
The Temple's Mystery is Linked to a Mythological Tale
A mythological tale is associated with this temple. It is believed that once Takshak, the king of snakes, performed penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his rigorous worship, Lord Shiva granted him the boon of immortality. Takshak Nag wished to reside near Shiva in Mahakal Van i.e., Ujjain, without causing disturbance to anyone. Shiva accepted his wish and gave him this place. Since then, this temple has been considered secluded and special.
A Glimpse of Nag Dev with Shiva Parvati
In the idol of the temple, the serpent god has spread his hood, and Lord Shiva is seated on the same hood. Goddess Parvati is also with him. This idol is made of marble, and just seeing it provides a different spiritual experience.
Belief of Getting Rid of Kaal Sarp Dosh
Many devotees from all over the country come to this temple only because it is believed that just by visiting the Nagchandreshwar Temple, one gets rid of Kaal Sarp Dosh. For those who are facing repeated obstacles in their lives or whose horoscope has Kaal Sarp Yog, visiting here is considered very fruitful.
One Has to Wait a Long Time for Darshan
Because this temple opens only once a year, a huge crowd is seen in Ujjain on this day. Many devotees reach Ujjain a day earlier so that they can be first in line. Special gates and security arrangements are made by the administration for darshan so that there is no disturbance.
A Confluence of Faith and Belief
The atmosphere of the Nagchandreshwar Temple becomes absolutely divine on Nag Panchami. The entire complex echoes with conch shells, gongs, and chanting of mantras. The devotees who reach here consider themselves lucky because they get a rare opportunity, which comes only once a year.
