A taxi driver died after falling into a nearly 50-foot-deep gorge in Nainital. The driver had reportedly gone to the parking area to use the toilet when he lost his balance and fell from the parking area into the gorge.
The incident came to light after the driver did not return for some time. People nearby began searching and found that he had fallen into the gorge below the parking area. Police and a rescue team were informed.
The deceased was reportedly working as a taxi driver and had come to Nainital with his vehicle. He parked the vehicle in the parking area and went to use the toilet. While standing near the edge of the parking area, he reportedly slipped or lost his balance and fell directly into the gorge.
The driver fell around 50 feet and sustained serious injuries. He died after falling into the gorge.
Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and inspected the site. Because the gorge was deep and difficult to access, the rescue team faced difficulties in recovering the body. The team carefully descended into the gorge and brought the body out.
After the body was recovered, the deceased was identified and his family was informed. The body was taken for the post-mortem process, and necessary legal action was initiated.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the death. The death is being treated prima facie as having occurred after the driver fell into the gorge. The circumstances will become clearer after the post-mortem report and examination of the site.
Police are also examining whether there was a railing or barricading at the location from which the driver fell. If any deficiency in the safety arrangements is found, action or improvements may be required at the level of the concerned department.
Local residents have demanded a safety audit of all parking areas in the city. They have sought b railings, safety walls and adequate lighting at parking sites located near gorges, along with warning boards to prevent people from going towards dangerous areas.
According to local residents, safety arrangements at parking areas are important in a hill tourism destination such as Nainital. A large number of tourists and taxi drivers reach the area every day, while several parking sites are located near mountain slopes and deep gorges.
During the tourism season, large numbers of taxis and private vehicles reach Nainital. Drivers sometimes stop for a short period in parking areas after driving for long periods. The availability of safe toilet and other basic facilities for them has also been raised as an issue following the incident.
If adequate toilet facilities are available in parking areas, people would not need to go towards dangerous slopes or the edges of parking sites. The incident has brought attention to the availability of such facilities and the safety arrangements at parking locations.
Local residents have also called for b railings, safety walls and warning boards at places where parking areas are located directly above deep gorges or slopes.
The incident has also highlighted the risks associated with ordinary activities in hilly areas without adequate caution. Uneven ground can be present near slopes, while rain or moisture can make soil slippery.
Police action is continuing. After the post-mortem, the body will be handed over to the family, which is preparing for the deceased's last rites.
