Gen-Z Storms Nepal Parliament Over Social Media Ban; Police Respond with Force

Gen-Z youth stormed the parliament in protest against the ban on social media platforms in Nepal. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. The youth are dissatisfied with the government's decision.

Nepal Protest: The youth of Nepal, specifically Gen-Z, have violently protested against the government's ban on social media platforms. Thousands of young people took to the streets in the capital Kathmandu and other cities to voice their opposition. The anger of the youth was directed against the decision to ban social media.

Due to the social media ban, young people are unable to use popular services such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X. This is why they took to the streets and marched towards the parliament building in protest against this government move.

Parliament Infiltrated, Police Action

The protesters were initially trying to maintain peace, but the situation gradually became tense. Young people broke through police barricades and climbed over gates to enter the federal parliament premises in New Baneshwor.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to stop them. However, this led to the situation getting out of control and widespread unrest. Several protesters were also injured. According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were marching peacefully at first, but their anger intensified when the police used force to stop them.

Banned Social Media Platforms

The Nepal government banned 26 social media platforms on September 4th. Prominent apps included:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • WhatsApp
  • Reddit
  • X

The government claimed that this step was taken for "national security" and "public safety." However, the youth consider it an attack on freedom of expression.

Growing Discontent Among the Youth

In Nepal, Gen-Z, in particular, is closely associated with digital and social media. These young people share their opinions and get news updates on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Following the social media ban, anger among the youth has surged. They feel that the government has tried to suppress their voices. Many social media influencers and students participated in the protests.

Prime Minister KP Oli's Stance

Prime Minister KP Oli's government has stated that the social media ban is necessary for national security. He believes that misinformation and rumors on some platforms can cause confusion among the public. However, critics view this as a move against democracy and freedom of expression. Opposition parties are also supporting the youth protests and demanding the revocation of the social media ban.
