Elevated Corridor: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will be on a visit to Puducherry today, where he will lay the foundation stone for the 4-kilometer long elevated corridor, estimated to cost Rs 436 crore. This corridor will connect Indira Gandhi Square and Rajiv Gandhi Square, which will reduce traffic congestion in the city. Additionally, Gadkari will inaugurate the 38-kilometer long Puducherry-Poondiankuppam section on NH-32, developed at a cost of Rs 1,588 crore. On this occasion, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailasnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, and several Union and State Ministers will be present.
Relief for Congested Areas
Puducherry Public Works Minister K. Lakshminarayanan had sought assistance from Nitin Gadkari for this project a few months ago. The Central government approved the project at the end of September. This elevated corridor will be constructed between Indira Gandhi Square and Rajiv Gandhi Square, which are among the city's most congested areas.
According to officials, this corridor will begin 430 meters south of Indira Gandhi Square and conclude 620 meters north of Rajiv Gandhi Square on the East Coast Road. Its main structure will be approximately 1,150 meters long and 20.5 meters wide.
Corridor to Connect New Bus Stand and Villupuram Road
This elevated corridor will not only connect the two major squares but also link the New Bus Stand and Villupuram Road. This will significantly reduce traffic pressure within the city. Local residents and commuters will now spend less time traversing through the city. This project, funded by the Central government, is set to modernize Puducherry's transport system in the coming years.
Projects Worth Over Rs 2000 Crore to be Dedicated to the Nation
On this occasion, Nitin Gadkari will not only lay the foundation stone for the elevated corridor but also inaugurate three national highway projects worth over Rs 2,000 crore. Prominent among these is the Puducherry-Poondiankuppam section of National Highway 32.
This section is 38 kilometers long and has been developed as a four-lane road. The project incurred a cost of Rs 1,588 crore. Its completion will further improve road connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and it will also boost regional trade and tourism.
Several Senior Leaders to be Present
The event will be attended by Puducherry's Lieutenant Governor K. Kailasnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Union Minister L. Murugan, Tamil Nadu's Public Works Minister E. V. Velu, Puducherry's Public Works Minister K. Lakshminarayanan, and Assembly Speaker R. Selvam, among several other senior officials and public representatives.
It is expected that this elevated corridor and the new highway projects will provide a new direction to traffic management and connectivity in Puducherry and its surrounding areas. After the completion of these projects, the pace of development in the region is anticipated to accelerate.
