Discussions over the possible vacation of the government residence at 10 Circular Road in Patna have intensified in Bihar’s political circles, with indications that no immediate action will be taken regarding the accommodation currently occupied by the family of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi.
Discussion Over Allotment Review
In recent days, speculation grew within political corridors that preparations were underway to vacate the government residence located at 10 Circular Road. The residence has long been occupied by the family of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi.
According to sources, some BJP leaders recently raised questions at public forums regarding the continued need for such a large government accommodation by a former Chief Minister. They stated that government properties should be used in accordance with prescribed rules and that a review is necessary if the allotment period has expired. Following these remarks, discussions intensified in political circles, and there were reports of administrative-level reviews of related files.
Sources indicated that the Building Construction Department had begun examining the rules and conditions related to the allotment. However, there has been no official confirmation from the government regarding this process. Subsequently, indications emerged that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar decided that no immediate strict action would be taken in the matter.
Political Significance of 10 Circular Road
The residence at 10 Circular Road holds symbolic importance in Bihar’s politics. It has served as a centre of power for years and is closely associated with the political identity of the Lalu-Rabri family. Any move to vacate the residence could have led to direct political confrontation.
Sources said the Chief Minister signalled that the status quo should be maintained for the time being. Considering coalition dynamics and social balance, the government was not seen as favouring escalation of any controversy. As a result, potential administrative action has been put on hold.
Statements from Political Parties
BJP leaders stated that their objective was to raise the issue of adherence to rules, not to target any individual personally. RJD leaders, however, maintained that the allotment of the residence complies with rules and that unnecessary controversy is being created. The RJD also said the issue was being raised for political gain.
Under Bihar government rules, certain facilities may be provided to former Chief Ministers, including accommodation. Interpretations and duration of these rules have differed from time to time, contributing to the ongoing debate.
For now, there will be no immediate action to vacate the Rabri residence. However, political observers indicate that the issue has not been conclusively settled and could re-emerge as a subject of political discussion depending on changing circumstances.
