Delhi: India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the meeting of National Security Advisors of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states. The conference focuses on regional security issues, and this meeting is considered a significant step towards normalizing bilateral relations between India and China.
Efforts Towards Restoring India-China Relations
This high-level dialogue between the two countries is taking place at a time when bilateral relations have been severely strained due to the ongoing military standoff in Eastern Ladakh since May 2020. Wang Yi stated that China and India should remain good neighbours, and both ancient civilizations should learn from history and move forward together. He added that both countries should maintain peace and stability in the border areas and handle sensitive issues wisely.
India's Clear Stance on Terrorism
Addressing the SCO meeting, NSA Doval stated that combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is crucial for regional peace and stability. He also emphasized that terrorism should not receive support or sympathy in any form. His statement comes at a time when India carried out precise strikes on terrorist hideouts in Pakistani territories on May 7.
Security-Related Discussions on SCO Platform
The objective of this Shanghai Cooperation Organisation conference is to strengthen security cooperation among member states. This organization connects several countries in Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia. Ajit Doval's visit is seen as an effort to restart dialogue between China and India through the SCO.
Discussion on Overall Development of Relations
According to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides reviewed recent developments in bilateral relations and emphasized the need to enhance mutual trust, encourage people-to-people contact, and foster the overall development of relations.
China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, posted on social media that positive outcomes for both countries will only emerge when 'the dragon and the elephant' move forward together. He also stated that both nations should resolve sensitive issues and maintain peace in border areas.
Proposal for Special Representatives' Dialogue Between India and China
The Ministry of External Affairs informed that Ajit Doval has extended an invitation to Wang Yi for the 24th round of Special Representative-level talks in India. He stated that he is ready to meet with the Chinese representative in India on a mutually convenient date for these talks.
