NSE and BSE closed on April 14 for Ambedkar Jayanti MCX sees partial trading

Indian stock exchanges NSE and Bross segments. MCX operated partially in the evening session, while NCDEX remained shut. The 2026 holiday calendar outlines upcoming market closures and confirms a Muhurat Trading session on November 8.

Domestic equity markets, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), remained closed on Tuesday, April 14, on account of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti, a nationally observed holiday.

No trading activity took place across equity, derivatives, currency, or any other segments on the exchanges during the day.

Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti is observed nationwide to commemorate the contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Financial markets, along with government institutions, remain closed on this occasion, requiring investors to plan transactions in advance.

Commodity markets operated on a different schedule. While NSE and BSE remained closed throughout the day, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) conducted partial trading. The morning session was closed, while trading resumed in the evening session from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm. In contrast, no trading took place in either session on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX).

Market holidays affect not only trading activity but also investor strategies and coordination with global markets. International investors participating in Indian markets are required to factor in such holidays in advance to manage portfolios.

As per the 2026 trading holiday calendar, the next market closure after April 14 will be on May 1 for Maharashtra Day. Subsequent holidays include May 28 for Bakrid, June 26 for Muharram, and September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi. Additional closures are scheduled for October 2 on Gandhi Jayanti, October 20 on Dussehra, and November 10 on Diwali Balipratipada. Markets will also remain closed on November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti and December 25 for Christmas.

Diwali is not listed as a full trading holiday in the 2026 calendar as it falls on a Sunday, which is already a weekly market holiday. However, a special Muhurat Trading session will be conducted on November 8, 2026 (Sunday), in line with market tradition. The session allows investors to conduct symbolic trades, and the exact timing will be announced separately by the exchanges.
