In his blog, PM Modi stated that hearing the word "Somnath" evokes feelings of pride, faith, and spiritual strength in the mind and heart. Located in Prabhas Patan on the western coast of India, this sacred shrine is an eternal symbol of India’s soul. It is not merely a temple, but a vibrant representation of Indian civilization, culture, and belief.

First Among the Twelve Jyotirlingas

Prime Minister Modi explained in his blog that the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram mentions 12 Jyotirlingas, with Somnath being named first. The line “Saureshtre Somnatham cha” is proof that Somnath’s spiritual and civilizational significance has always been paramount. This temple is not only a place of worship but also a center of India’s eternal consciousness.

The Glory of Somnath Described in Scriptures

PM Modi, referencing the scriptures, stated that by beholding the Somnath शिवलिंग, one is freed from sins and attains desired results. According to the scriptures, this place paves the way for liberation and spiritual peace. This is why, for centuries, crores of devotees have come here to experience faith and belief.

A Painful History of Invasion and Destruction

The Prime Minister wrote that unfortunately, this sacred Somnath Temple was a target of foreign invaders. Their aim was not merely plunder, but to destroy India’s faith and civilization. In 1026 AD, Mahmud of Ghazni attacked Somnath and demolished the temple. This is considered one of the greatest tragedies in human history.

2026: A Historic Significance

PM Modi explained that the year 2026 holds immense importance for the Somnath Temple. This year marks the 1000th anniversary of the first invasion of Somnath. It also marks the 75th anniversary of the temple’s reconstruction. The current form of the Somnath Temple emerged on May 11, 1951, becoming a symbol of India’s faith and self-reliance.

Somnath is a Tale of Self-Respect, Not Just Destruction

Prime Minister Modi clearly stated that the story of Somnath is not just one of destruction. It is a tale of the self-respect, patience, and unwavering faith of crores of children of Mother India. After every attack, Somnath rose again, emerging ber than before. This is the greatest strength of India’s civilization.

A Tradition of Sacrifice and Reconstruction

PM Modi wrote that whenever Somnath was attacked, great men and women came forward who sacrificed their lives to defend it. From generation to generation, the people of India rebuilt the temple and kept its consciousness alive. Mahmud Ghaznavi looted and left, but he could not extinguish India’s faith.

The Contributions of Devi Ahilyabai and Swami Vivekananda

The Prime Minister, remembering Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, said that her contribution was extremely important in keeping the Somnath worship tradition alive. Referring to the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda, PM Modi explained that he called Somnath a vibrant school of Indian civilization. According to Vivekananda, these temples impart knowledge deeper than books.

Sardar Patel and Post-Independence Reconstruction

PM Modi wrote that after independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel took on the responsibility of reconstructing the Somnath Temple. His visit to Somnath during Diwali in 1947 deeply affected him. He resolved that Somnath would be reconstructed, and this dream was realized in 1951.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s Historic Decision

The Prime Minister also stated that the then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, participated in the inauguration of the Somnath Temple despite all opposition. This decision of his was recorded as a new chapter in Indian history. This event became a symbol of India’s cultural self-reliance.

K.M. Munshi and Civilizational Consciousness

PM Modi also remembered the contribution of K.M. Munshi. His book ‘Somnath, The Shrine Eternal’ is considered important for understanding the soul of Somnath. This book reflects the consciousness of India that survives even after physical destruction.
