New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a comprehensive meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, primarily discussing enhanced cooperation in the areas of trade, defense, security, and technology. Both leaders shared views on strengthening bilateral ties and agreed to expand partnerships in education. A business delegation was also present during the discussions, deliberating on opportunities for economic cooperation.
India Raises Concern Over Khalistani Extremism
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed concern over the increasing activities of Khalistani extremists in Britain. India has repeatedly raised incidents involving Khalistani elements disrupting cultural and public events in the UK over the past few months. Citing incidents such as security breaches during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to London in March, Modi prominently addressed this issue.
The Ministry of External Affairs had stated at the time that protesters disrupted events and misused democratic freedoms. India also demanded that the British government fulfill its diplomatic obligations in such cases and ensure security. Prime Minister Modi stated in the meeting that India expects the host government to play an active role in curbing the activities of extremists.
Goal to Double Bilateral Trade
Prime Minister Modi also emphasized bilateral trade during the meeting. He stated that the current trade between India and Britain stands at USD 56 billion. Modi expressed confidence that this target could be doubled even before 2030. To achieve this, industrialists and business representatives from both countries discussed strategies. Over a hundred senior executive officers were present at the meeting, sharing their thoughts on business opportunities and investment.
Discussion on Defense and Technological Cooperation
Possibilities for enhancing cooperation in defense and technological sectors were also discussed at the meeting. Both leaders considered further strengthening the growing India-UK bilateral defense ties and technological cooperation. Prime Minister Modi invited British companies to increase technology investments in India and explore opportunities for participation in high-tech projects.
Education and University Cooperation
Prime Minister Modi also shared plans to enhance cooperation in the education sector. He stated that nine universities from Britain would open their campuses in India, which would promote bilateral cooperation in higher education and research. This would also provide global education and training opportunities for young talents and students.
Past Record of Khalistani Activities in Britain
India has consistently raised concerns about Khalistani activities on British soil since January. Incidents such as protests outside the Indian High Commission and interference in cultural events were cited. This also included an attempt to stop the screening of the film 'Emergency' in Harrow. India states that such activities could affect bilateral relations and weaken the security situation.
